Afilias EVP and CTO Ram Mohan said DNSSEC deployment is a key development for India and will help ensure that .IN remains one of the most secure domains worldwide.
(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — Global Internet infrastructure services provider Afilias (www.afilias.info) has enabled Domain Name System Security Extensions for .IN, the country code top-level domain representing India, improving global security for this TLD, which has more than 700,000 individual domains.
According to Afilias’ Tuesday announcement, .IN was officially signed on November 4, 2010 and its Delegation Signer records are expected to be entered into the DNS Root by the Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (www.iana.org) shortly, allowing the .IN zone to be validated using DNSSEC.
“Afilias has been a leader in DNSSEC deployment, and is proud to provide this state-of–the-art level of security for the .IN domain,” Afilias executive vice president and chief technology officer Ram Mohan said in a statement. “Afilias has now secured more top-level domains with DNSSEC than any other registry provider. DNSSEC is a critical step forward for India and serves as a foundation to ensure that the .IN TLD remains among the most secure domains in the world.”
In August, Afilias announced plans to deploy DNSSEC across its registry platforms, signing 13 more top-level domains and increasing DNSSEC deployment among domain registries by 50 percent. The .IN domain represents the tenth TLD Afilias has secured with DNSSEC as part of this effort.
DNSSEC development began in the early 1990’s, but it has only recently become ready for broad deployment as an additional security measure to protect the DNS from cache poisoning exploits. Exploit can, for instance, let malicious entities intercept Internet users’ requests to access a website, and redirect or eavesdrop on them without their knowledge, and with no ability to reassert control.
DNSSEC adds digital signatures to the DNS infrastructure to automatically ensure that users are not hijacked and taken to an unintended destination.
“Security is a key priority for India and we are pleased to be among the leaders taking the initiative to support the adoption of DNSSEC,” said Ravi Shanker, chief executive officer of the .IN registry operator National Internet Exchange of India (www.nixi.in). “Our efforts in working with Afilias to improve .IN’s security illustrate our commitment to enhance India’s sovereign space on the Web and improve the value it provides to Internet users around the world.”
Afilias’ rollout of DNSSEC is based on the proven strategy used in the successful deployment of the .ORG registry between 2009 and 2010. The company said that its deployment of DNSSEC to other TLDs will be done in a similar, careful, step-by-step way.
Once the DS records are entered into the root, Afilias will activate a “friends and family” period that will allow the public to gain experience with a select group of .IN second level domain names that have also been signed.
