April 9, 2008 — (WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — Domain registry Affilias (affilias.info) announced on Wednesday its roll-out plan for .ME, a new domain name extension that is anticipated to be used as a personalized Web address and a business marketing tool.
The registry says that trademark owners can start applying for .ME applications in May as part of the General Sunrise Period. However, registrars who sign up before that time can start accepting Sunrise and Landrush applications and pre-registration requests as soon as they would like.
The registration for .ME will have a similar process as the .ASIA domain, enabling multiple parties to submit applications for the same .ME domain. Domain names that receive more than one application will go to an auction process.
The registry says that .ME Landrush will likely begin in early June, with Open Registration to follow in mid-July on a first-come, first-served basis. There will be a two-year minimum registration on all .ME domain names registered during the Landrush and initial Open Registration periods.
“We believe .ME has incredible potential for Internet users worldwide,” says Predag Lesic, the registry’s executive director. “Think about it, with a .ME domain, the Internet will, quite simply, be all about you. For the first time in Internet history, domain names are essentially personal.”
Lesic says the .ME domain are expected to be in high demand, considering the domain’s universal appeal. Premium names such as verb-oriented domains will be held back for auction after Open Registration, he says.
