In what might be the only cloud-related product story to come from somewhere other than the VMworld conference in San Francisco this week, utility storage technology company 3PAR (www.3par.com) announced this week that hosting company DataPipe (www.datapipe.com) is providing cloud-based services using 3PAR’s technology.
Like many of the cloud computing stories out of VMworld, however, 3PAR’s announcement focused more on the technology powering the solution than the specifics of the solution itself, pointing to a recently observable trend in which some of the battle lines in the cloud computing space are drawn along allegiances to certain pieces of technology, be it the hypervisor, storage software or other tools.
DataPipe’s virtual private array and disaster recovery services, says 3PAR, are powered by the latter company’s utility storage technology (along with VMware technology, it is worth mentioning). DataPipe is the first member of 3PAR’s Cloud-Agile partner program to offer its customers the company’s Cloud-Agile: ASSURED and Cloud-Agile: SECURED services.
According to the 3PAR website, DataPipe is one of four participants in the Cloud-Agile program, which also includes managed services company Attenda, hosting and colocation provider Terremark and carrier and managed services firm Verizon Business. The Cloud-Agile section of the 3PAR website describes the program as including “an elite group of companies [that] retain specially trained staff and maintain close alliances with 3PAR.”
DataPipe’s Stratosphere is a virtualized environment built on VMware technology, a by-design offering with no published pricing on the company’s website, but described as enterprise class infrastructure. A detailed description of the service, as well as a downloadable PDF are available at the DataPipe website.
“With 3PAR and VMware powering Stratosphere, we have been able to extend the value we deliver to our customers and enhance the security, agility, and cost-efficiency of the services we offer,” says Michael Parks, chief technology officer for DataPipe, quoted in the 3PAR press release. “As the first 3PAR Cloud-Agile member to offer Cloud-Agile: ASSURED and Cloud-Agile: SECURED services, we now have the opportunity to expand our cloud service offerings in the areas of security and compliance to increase the value we offer our customers.”
DataPipe, according to the press release, is using the Cloud-Agile: ASSURED service to power its disaster recovery and remote backup solution, and Cloud-Agile: SECURED to support isolated, secure virtual private array services.
Earlier this week, DataPipe made its fairly regular appearance on Netcraft’s list of the most highly available web hosting company websites, a debatably-valuable indicator of the performance of a hosting provider’s network as a whole.
