34SP.com Unveils Pub Mashup Contest

34SP.com's pub mashup competition runs until June 30, 2009, and accepting any entry

(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — In a unique marketing ploy, Manchester-based web host 34SP.com (www.34sp.com) has unveiled a new online contest that combines the UK’s traditional love of pubs with modern web tools such as Twitter and Google, offering cash and prizes worth £1,334 (or $2,152.60) to web developers who create winning mashups that have “anything at all to do with pubs.”

The First Ever Pub Mashup Competition, created and sponsored by 34SP.com, runs until June 30, 2009, accepting any entry “just so long as the mashup involves a pub in some way,” according to 34SP.com’s Wednesday announcement. Winners will be selected in early July by a panel of 34SP.com employees based on criteria including originality, functionality, robustness, fun and engagement, and the lofty goal of the “betterment of the greater Pub community.”

”Let’s face it, here in the UK pubs are a revered institution,” 34SP.com co-founder Stuart Melling said in a statement. “Our own staff enjoy a quick pint quite frequently here in Manchester, plus we often visit our local pubs, so we thought – why not create a great contest that involves both our audience of web developers and pubs? Plus, it gives the web development community a great way to combine their favorite activities into one – pubs and coding mashups.”

Mashups are web applications that combine data or functionality from two or more sources into a single integrated application, frequently created by re-tooling open APIs and data sources such as Google or Twitter to produce results that were not the original reason for producing the raw source data.
