SoftLayer Gets SAS 70 Type II Certified

By David Hamilton, December 30, 2008

(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) -- Web hosting and virtualized data center services provider SoftLayer (www.softlayer.com) has successfully completed a Statement on Auditing Standards Number 70 Type II audit and evaluation of all its processes and systems, reassuring customers of the company's high standards and practices.

Plano, Texas-based SoftLayer announced the results of its review last week, which was conducted by an independent auditing agency and included rigorous testing over a six-month period of all SoftLayer's data center facilities located in Dallas, Seattle, and Washington DC.

SoftLayer's proprietary management tools and "Network-Within-a-Network topology" were put through their paces, proving that the company's unique system delivers the power and control needed to securely manage its scalable IT environments.

The SAS 70 Type II is part of the Sarbanes-Oxley Act, which defines the standards used by a service auditor to assess the reliability of a company's internal controls and its handling of critical business data. Originally intended for the financial services industry, SAS 70 certification is now known as a prerequisite for maintaining critical data for businesses. A Type II report is more exhaustive, involving detailed testing of the organization's controls over a minimum time period of six months.

"We are very excited to have completed this process," SoftLayer customer service manager Steve Kinman said in a statement. "It gives us an objective standard for assuring all of our customers, of all sizes, that we provide reliable, tested, and secure hosting services based upon industry-recognized standards."

Requiring annual renewal, SAS 70 is a perennial compliance process for most data centers that handle financial data. Both managed service provider DataPoint (www.datapoint.com) and INetU Managed Hosting (www.inetu.net) were granted SAS 70 Type II Certification earlier in the month.

October 2009 - Web Hosting's All Star Team
This has been, for us, one of the most interesting, exciting and challenging build-ups to an issue of the magazine yet, Web Hosting's All Star Team. The balloting process was our first experiment with a kind of user participation we're planning to do a lot more with in the months to come. We had thousands of ballots submitted, with hundreds of write-in suggestions and a demonstration of user engagement that has us feeling super positive about the project.

July 2009 - What am I Worth?
One of the interesting luxuries of working on a project like the printed WHIR magazine is that it allows us to play with things like our point of view from one issue to the next. In recent months we've been giving added attention to the kind of practical and applicable advice aimed at smaller hosts and resellers. This issue carries on with that point of view, asking, in our cover story, "what am I worth?" It's a complicated question without a clear-cut answer.

May 2009 - The Blueprint for a Small Web Host
I was a little surprised by how difficult it became to see this idea through. We set out to assemble a blueprint for a small hosting business, but butted up pretty quickly against the general impossibility of covering all the territory that was out there to be covered. The basic constraints of a printed magazine, and the less-than-infinite amount of time we had available forced us to face the fact that we could never produce an exhaustive guide to starting a hosting company.
