(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) -- According to several reports, James Hamilton, one of the thinkers credited with driving Microsoft's (www.microsoft.com) recent movement toward containerized data center technology in the last several years, will leave the company to join Amazon (www.amazon.com).
A post on Tech Hermit late last week reported rumors that Hamilton would be leaving Microsoft, and speculation that he would be joining Amazon.
Data Center Knowledge has a report saying Amazon has confirmed the move, and that Hamilton will be joining Amazon Web Services as vice president and distinguished engineer, beginning in January.
Hamilton told Rich Miller at Data Center Knowledge his 12 years at Microsoft have been "super interesting," and that it is tough to leave. He adds that he is looking forward to the new challenges at the new position.
He was one of the early advocates of the container-based approach to data center construction, a philosophy that soon became Microsoft's approach on a more official level, with the news that it would be building its Chicago data center with shipping containers, the first phase of which was completed by the company in October.
Earlier this month, Microsoft announced some details on an expanded plan for modular data center building with a blog post describing its "Generation 4" data center vision.
