iWeb Appoints New HR Director

By Liam Eagle, December 05, 2008

(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) -- Montreal, Canada-based web hosting provider iWeb (www.iweb.com) announced on Friday that it had named Michel Thivierge the company's new director of human resources.

The company says human resources is becoming an increasingly important part of its business, as iWeb has grown considerably over the past two years, from 42 employees in 2006 to more than 130 today.

Thivierge has held a variety of human resources, most recently at Cirque du Soleil, one of the most well-known Montreal businesses.

Like Cirque du Soliel, iWeb has made a point of extending its reach internationally. According to the press release, more than 60 percent of the company's revenue comes in from abroad.

"We are delighted to welcome Michel," says CEO Eric Chouinard, confirming the excitement implied by the exclamation mark in the press release's headline. "He has tremendous expertise in HR Management, and complements our management team extremely well. "

Seeming to suggest that Thivierge has been with the company for several weeks now, iWeb's announcement says his first weeks were devoted to developing a strategic plan for the management of human resources.

"I am really proud to be joining iWeb at such an important moment in its evolution," says Thivierge, quoted in the announcement. "The foundations are solid, the original team is still in place and the web hosting industry is experiencing tremendous growth. There's a lot of enthusiasm in the air, and I am convinced that many here, myself included, are aware that we are participating in a great adventure; we are a part of something special."

The company says one of the challenges it faces is "to continue its sustained growth while preserving its corporate identity and personality."

Thivierge is already working to fill several positions of need at the company, including programmer, programmer-analyst, customer service representative, data center operators and system administrators, a research and development manager, a financial analyst, a director for managed services and several others. The company expects to fill the positions by the spring of 2009.

October 2009 - Web Hosting's All Star Team
This has been, for us, one of the most interesting, exciting and challenging build-ups to an issue of the magazine yet, Web Hosting's All Star Team. The balloting process was our first experiment with a kind of user participation we're planning to do a lot more with in the months to come. We had thousands of ballots submitted, with hundreds of write-in suggestions and a demonstration of user engagement that has us feeling super positive about the project.

July 2009 - What am I Worth?
One of the interesting luxuries of working on a project like the printed WHIR magazine is that it allows us to play with things like our point of view from one issue to the next. In recent months we've been giving added attention to the kind of practical and applicable advice aimed at smaller hosts and resellers. This issue carries on with that point of view, asking, in our cover story, "what am I worth?" It's a complicated question without a clear-cut answer.

May 2009 - The Blueprint for a Small Web Host
I was a little surprised by how difficult it became to see this idea through. We set out to assemble a blueprint for a small hosting business, but butted up pretty quickly against the general impossibility of covering all the territory that was out there to be covered. The basic constraints of a printed magazine, and the less-than-infinite amount of time we had available forced us to face the fact that we could never produce an exhaustive guide to starting a hosting company.
