Web Host CrystalTech Sees Downtime
Verio Attracts Resellers with Free Month of VPS Hosting: Companies looking to boost revenues are finding Verio's Free VPS promotion the right fit for getting started as Hosting Reseller.
December 4, 2006 -- (WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) -- Web hosting provider CrystalTech (crystaltech.com) was hit with a distributed denial of service attack that resulted in more than four hours of downtime, according to reports by Internet research firm Netcraft (netcraft.com).
The DDoS attack involved more than 5,000 machines attacking CrystalTech's DNS servers, flooding the company's network, says Netcraft.
CrystalTech has not said whether the attack targeted a particular customer or the hosting company itself. Netcraft says industries conducting large volumes of transactions are frequent targets for DDoS attacks. These attacks are often preceded by a request for payment from parties who claim the ability to prevent an imminent attack. If no payment is made, a DDoS attack follows. Attacks are often timed to peak traffic periods when uptime is critical, says Netcraft.
"This was not just a simple DDOS," says Bob Cichon, president and COO of CrystalTech. "We get those all the time and no one sees it, since our team and equipment handle it very well. This was a very well planned and professional DNS DDoS."
