November 28, 2008 -- (WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) -- Data center developer and operator TEAM Companies (www.team-companies.com) and Iowa Health System (www.ihs.org) announced on Wednesday they have formalized plans to build a data center in Waukee, Iowa, a suburb of Des Moines.

According to the joint announcement, TEAM and IHS will own the 46,000 square foot data center together as TEAM Des Moines Partners and it will house the data for all of IHS' patient and employee records. IHS says it employs more than 19,000 workers and in 2007 it treated more than 1.8 million patients.

"When we're dealing with millions of records every year that contain confidential and critical information, it requires the utmost care and expertise," says William Leaver, president and CEO of IHS. "Iowa Health System and TEAM Companies thoroughly and completely understand the responsibility associated with maintaining and managing this data. We don't take that lightly and never will."

Worth $45 million when completed, the data center will be built in three phases, with the first phase scheduled to open in the third quarter of 2009. IHS says it will occupy approximately half of the first phase once it's completed with the remaining half opening up for other interested businesses.

While IHS' patient and employee information will be stored in the new Des Moines facility, a copy of all the information will be kept in one of TEAM's other data centers at Cedar Falls, around 100 miles.

Data Center Knowledge reports that "the importance of disaster preparation was reinforced for Iowans during the serious flooding last summer, when local providers TEAM and Involta helped dozens of Iowa companies recover their IT operations."

Founded in 2004, TEAM Companies is a data center firm headquartered in Cedar Falls, Iowa. One of the umbrella companies, TEAM Technologies, operates and provides managed data center services while TEAM Properties is its real estate developer. According to the company's website, the two groups work together to "bring world-class data centers to safe, secondary markets in the Upper Midwest."

In addition to serving companies in the medical industry, TEAM says it specializes in providing data center space and security to businesses in the insurance, financial and technology fields.

Iowa Health System's web site is printed incorrectly in the article. It's actually www.ihs.org.

Hi Deb. Thanks for pointing out that typo. I've fixed the link in the story.
