November 26, 2008 -- (WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) -- Internet search powerhouse Google (www.google.com) is significantly reducing its contract worker staff, which number around 10,000, but the company has no current plans to lay off employees, according to a Wall Street Journal report Tuesday.
Spokeswoman Jane Penner told the Wall Street Journal, "We have been thinking for some time, before the acute phase of the economic crisis, about significantly reducing the number of contract workers."
Google did not specify how many contract workers are on the chopping block, nor the schedule for the layoffs.
At the end of the third quarter, Google had 20,123 company employees and roughly 10,000 contractors, according to the report.
UK technology news site The Register (www.theregister.co.uk) has reported that it may be good news for some contractors that are treated like "second class citizens," according to an unnamedformer employee. Contract employees, according to the source, are denied access from company events including its famous TGIF weekly get togethers, and certain perks such as a free ride on the Google shuttle bus.
