November 24, 2008 -- (WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) -- IBM (www.ibm.com) denied Friday that the technology giant had violated its $863 million outsourcing contract with the State of Texas to consolidate the 27 agencies' data centers into its Austin and San Angelo facilities.
Earlier this month, the Texas government ordered IBM to resolve key service issues involving the backing up of data on some agencies' servers or it would terminate the seven-year contract.
Kenneth Weiss, IBM vice president for the data center project, submitted a letter denying the accusations, which marks the latest development in the ongoing dialogue between IBM and the Texas government.
Last month, Gov. Rick Perry put the contract work to a halt after officials discovered the significant state data loss.
On November 4, the state's officials warned IBM that the company had violated its contract, giving the company 30 days to resolve the backup issues or it would terminate the contract.
In the letter, Weiss wrote that the company has been working to devise a plan to resolve these problems, but maintains that the company has "fulfilled its contractual duties and obligations to the State of Texas and has worked diligently."
Brian Rawson, the state's chief technology officer, wrote a response letter that reaffirms the state's position that IBM breached the contract relating to data backup.
The two parties have reached an agreement to resolve the issues through an informal process allowed by the contract by the December 4 deadline.
As of April 2007, IBM managed the servers and mainframes at 1,300 locations across the state in an effort to consolidate the 27 agencies' data centers into its Austin and San Angelo facilties.

This has been, for us, one of the most interesting, exciting and challenging build-ups to an issue of the magazine yet, Web Hosting's All Star Team. The balloting process was our first experiment with a kind of user participation we're planning to do a lot more with in the months to come. We had thousands of ballots submitted, with hundreds of write-in suggestions and a demonstration of user engagement that has us feeling super positive about the project.

July 2009 - What am I Worth?
One of the interesting luxuries of working on a project like the printed WHIR magazine is that it allows us to play with things like our point of view from one issue to the next. In recent months we've been giving added attention to the kind of practical and applicable advice aimed at smaller hosts and resellers. This issue carries on with that point of view, asking, in our cover story, "what am I worth?" It's a complicated question without a clear-cut answer.

May 2009 - The Blueprint for a Small Web Host
I was a little surprised by how difficult it became to see this idea through. We set out to assemble a blueprint for a small hosting business, but butted up pretty quickly against the general impossibility of covering all the territory that was out there to be covered. The basic constraints of a printed magazine, and the less-than-infinite amount of time we had available forced us to face the fact that we could never produce an exhaustive guide to starting a hosting company.
