(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) -- As we near the middle of November, hosting providers and related businesses announced several new promotions, including a November-specific domain promotion from LCN, free hosting for non-profits at SKGold Hosting, a limited-quantity discount on .EU domains from 123-Reg, changes to VPS specs and prices from Host Color and a “revolting” website contest from BizCom Web Services.
LCN Offers November Domain Registration Discount
Late last week, UK hosting provider LCN (www.lcn.com) announced that it would run a promotion on domain registration or hosting purchase for the duration of November, offering 15 percent off any purchase made using the promotional code “nov15” at checkout.
Products included in the promotion include .com, .net, .org and .uk domains, web hosting packages and email hosting packages.
SKGold Offers Non-Pofits Free Lifetime Hosting
Also last week, Canadian hosting firm SKGold Hosting (www.skgoldhosting.com) announced that non-profit and charitable organizations throughout Canada and the US could contact the company to establish a presence online.
SKGold says it will provide a non-profit with one of its “Baby” web hosting accounts free for one year, with the opportunity to extend the deal if the organization maintains its non-profit status.
Eligible organizations include those who can demonstrate they operate solely for the purpose of “improving in some way the corner of the world they serve.” They can apply by email, describing their organization and including a contact person.
123-Reg Offering Discount on .EU Domain Registration
On Wednesday, UK domain registrar and host 123-Reg (www.123-reg.co.uk) announced that it had launched a promotion through which it will offer 6,000 .EU domains for 97p each, for the first year of their registration.
The company has set up a website for the promotion (at a .EU domain, no less) at www.97p.eu, where customers can track how many of the discounted .EU domains remain (3,168 as of this writing). The promotional price is a 90 percent discount from the usual £9.99 per year price for .EU domains.
Host Color Adds to VPS Hosting Packages
Not strictly a promotion here, but web hosting provider Host Color (www.hostcolor.com) announced on Thursday that it had increased the specifications for its VPS hosting packages, for the second time since September.
Host Color’s VPS Power packages will now have 1,000 GB of data transfer, 50 GB of disk space and 1.28 GB of RAM. Its VPS Advance plans will have 600 GB of transfer, 30 GB of disk space and 768 MB of RAM – with its monthly rate reduced by $10 to $39.95 for annual contracts. The VPS Start plan now offers 300 GB of bandwidth, 15 GB of disk space and 384 MB of RAM.
"We are constantly improving our services and network and this allows us to give our VPS customers more resources without increasing the prices of our Virtual Private Servers", says Host Color's CTO Stoyan Marinov, in the announcement.
BizCom Web Services Launches “Revolting Business Website” Contest
Website design, application development and Internet marketing provider BizCom Web Services announced on Friday that it has launched its first Revolting Business Website Contest. The contest, which began November 1, and runs through November 30, is seeking the worst designed business sites on the web.
The contest is open to businesses based in the US with a minimum of four employees. They can submit their sites, and vote on other sites, at www.revoltingwebsitecontest.com. Finalists will be chosen by user voting, and submitted to a panel of judges, which will decide the winner.
“We’re looking for the worst sites on the web. If you have a business website that has lots of animated gifs, lengthy Flash intros, multiple font styles and colors, a difficult navigation structure, bad grammar, broken links, too much home page text, generic clipart, or too many stock photos etc, submit your link for your chance to win a website redesign package.” says Don Rodger, VP of technology, in the announcement.

October 2009 - Web Hosting's All Star Team
This has been, for us, one of the most interesting, exciting and challenging build-ups to an issue of the magazine yet, Web Hosting's All Star Team. The balloting process was our first experiment with a kind of user participation we're planning to do a lot more with in the months to come. We had thousands of ballots submitted, with hundreds of write-in suggestions and a demonstration of user engagement that has us feeling super positive about the project.

July 2009 - What am I Worth?
One of the interesting luxuries of working on a project like the printed WHIR magazine is that it allows us to play with things like our point of view from one issue to the next. In recent months we've been giving added attention to the kind of practical and applicable advice aimed at smaller hosts and resellers. This issue carries on with that point of view, asking, in our cover story, "what am I worth?" It's a complicated question without a clear-cut answer.

May 2009 - The Blueprint for a Small Web Host
I was a little surprised by how difficult it became to see this idea through. We set out to assemble a blueprint for a small hosting business, but butted up pretty quickly against the general impossibility of covering all the territory that was out there to be covered. The basic constraints of a printed magazine, and the less-than-infinite amount of time we had available forced us to face the fact that we could never produce an exhaustive guide to starting a hosting company.
