iland Offers Cloud Computing Service

By Anastasia Tubanos, November 13, 2008

(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) -- Hosted cloud services provider iland Internet Solutions (www.iland.com) announced on Wednesday that it has officially launched its iland Cloud Services for "companies looking to defray infrastructure costs and to stabilize monthly IT budgets."

This news follows iland's announcement last week that it opened a new Dallas data center, which includes redundant VMware infrastructure with advanced disaster recovery and networking capabilities.

According to the company's most recent press release, these cloud services will help companies save on network infrastructure costs during "tough economic times" as well as reduce costs in equipment, space and power.

Iland goes onto describe the process of its cloud services, explaining that through iCS the company can create a snapshot of a customer's current server implementation and create a more efficient version of that in the cloud on VMware server clusters, enabling customers to decrease equipment costs by using fewer devices, easing power and space requirements within their network data center.

Customers will be able to host their applications on iland's fault tolerant platform, which the company says is redundant at every level and enables its technicians to provision new servers within hours, versus weeks or months in traditional IT environments.

Another thing that makes its offering unique, says iland, is it supports a variety of enterprise applications running on Linux, Microsoft Windows, Microsoft Exchange, Microsoft SQL, Oracle and SAP. It also offers customers the option to lease operating systems, enabling them to further reduce capital expenditures.

Iland's engineers will also help determine the best architecture for each client's organization, in the effort to reduce downtime risk and the need for additional on-site IT staff, says the company.

"As the cost of data center space, support and power continue to rise relative to the total cost of ownership, the ability to migrate underutilized physical server capacity to virtual server clouds translates into significant savings," says Scott Sparvero, CEO of iland Internet Solutions. "And with less physical servers and storage, our customers save on fewer data center racks, less heating and cooling costs, and enjoy ease of overall management. In these competitive times, these reduced costs can translate into more available CAPEX for our customers' businesses. We have seen our customers reduce their physical data center requirements over ten fold."

Over the last month, several companies have announced their own cloud computing offerings, although many of the recent launches have been focused on storage more than other implementations of the cloud.

Earlier this week, Mezeo Software Corporation launched version two of its Mezeo Personal Cloud Storage file storage and collaboration platform, while a couple of weeks before that Webair announced it was offering a new cloud storage system that enables customers to reduce administrative overhead and increase data redundancy and flexibility.

Recent cloud storage options have also been launched by eLinia.

October 2009 - Web Hosting's All Star Team
This has been, for us, one of the most interesting, exciting and challenging build-ups to an issue of the magazine yet, Web Hosting's All Star Team. The balloting process was our first experiment with a kind of user participation we're planning to do a lot more with in the months to come. We had thousands of ballots submitted, with hundreds of write-in suggestions and a demonstration of user engagement that has us feeling super positive about the project.

July 2009 - What am I Worth?
One of the interesting luxuries of working on a project like the printed WHIR magazine is that it allows us to play with things like our point of view from one issue to the next. In recent months we've been giving added attention to the kind of practical and applicable advice aimed at smaller hosts and resellers. This issue carries on with that point of view, asking, in our cover story, "what am I worth?" It's a complicated question without a clear-cut answer.

May 2009 - The Blueprint for a Small Web Host
I was a little surprised by how difficult it became to see this idea through. We set out to assemble a blueprint for a small hosting business, but butted up pretty quickly against the general impossibility of covering all the territory that was out there to be covered. The basic constraints of a printed magazine, and the less-than-infinite amount of time we had available forced us to face the fact that we could never produce an exhaustive guide to starting a hosting company.
