(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) -- Released in beta in April, Microsoft Exchange Server 2010 is now officially released and available worldwide, helping European businesses reduce costs by as much as 70 percent, and offer better and more secure communication, according to Microsoft (www.microsoft.com) business division president Stephen Elop's Monday announcement at the Microsoft Tech•Ed Europe 2009 conference in Germany.
Exchange Server 2010 is part of a generation of solutions designed for increased business productivity and cost savings, along with Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2, which, coupled with improved productivity and innovation, Microsoft defines as "the New Efficiency." Elop said more than 45,000 partners are trained on Windows Server 2008 R2 and Exchange Server 2010, and several partners are announcing new services and solutions at Tech•Ed Europe, including Advanced Micro Devices, Avanade, Dell, EMC, Kaspersky Lab, Symantec and Unisys Corp.
"Exchange Server 2010 customers are already reporting cost savings of up to 70 percent thanks to a simplified high-availability model and support for lower-cost storage," Elop said. "Customers are also seeing productivity gains of more than 20 percent with a universal inbox that delivers e-mail, voice mail, instant messaging and text messaging consistently across virtually any device. Together with Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2, the combined cost savings and improved productivity helps customers generate long-term business success."
Elop also announced the release of Forefront Protection 2010 for Exchange Server, which helps Exchange Server customers further safeguard business information. Exchange Server 2010 and Forefront Protection 2010 for Exchange are available now for trial at the New Efficiency website (www.thenewefficiency.com), along with more information about Windows 7, Windows Server 2008 R2 and partner solutions. The community technology preview for SQL Server 2008 R2 will also be made available for download.
As part of Microsoft's commitment to providing European developers and IT professionals with technology to drive their organizations, Microsoft also announced beta releases of Microsoft Translator widgets and APIs, for building multi-language websites and client applications in many European languages.
Also, Microsoft's Trustworthy Computing Group will release new guidance that extends the full Security Development Lifecycle process to a wider external software developer audience. By enabling developers using the Agile development model to integrate Microsoft's SDL processes, tools and technologies directly into their software development environments, Trustworthy helps to ensure their applications are secure and their customers have a safer, more trusted computing experience.

This has been, for us, one of the most interesting, exciting and challenging build-ups to an issue of the magazine yet, Web Hosting's All Star Team. The balloting process was our first experiment with a kind of user participation we're planning to do a lot more with in the months to come. We had thousands of ballots submitted, with hundreds of write-in suggestions and a demonstration of user engagement that has us feeling super positive about the project.

July 2009 - What am I Worth?
One of the interesting luxuries of working on a project like the printed WHIR magazine is that it allows us to play with things like our point of view from one issue to the next. In recent months we've been giving added attention to the kind of practical and applicable advice aimed at smaller hosts and resellers. This issue carries on with that point of view, asking, in our cover story, "what am I worth?" It's a complicated question without a clear-cut answer.

May 2009 - The Blueprint for a Small Web Host
I was a little surprised by how difficult it became to see this idea through. We set out to assemble a blueprint for a small hosting business, but butted up pretty quickly against the general impossibility of covering all the territory that was out there to be covered. The basic constraints of a printed magazine, and the less-than-infinite amount of time we had available forced us to face the fact that we could never produce an exhaustive guide to starting a hosting company.
