(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) -- Web hosting and consulting provider Consonus Technologies (www.consonus.com) has announced the formalization of its innovation initiatives into a wholly-owned subsidiary, Consonus Labs, expanding its partner network of academic institutions, venture capital firms and technology providers to accelerate the development and deployment of leading data center solutions.
According to its Wednesday announcement, Consonus Labs will drive technology innovation in three areas, cloud computing and virtualization, energy efficiency, and data protection. Consonus Labs will use existing corporate resources including its sales, marketing, product development, engineering and operations divisions, as well as its partnerships ranging from universities, to investment banks, to technology developers.
"We look forward to enhancing our existing solution set with fresh ideas and new products and services that will enable our customers to save costs and decrease energy usage in the data center while maintaining the highest levels of availability and reliability," said Consonus corporate development executive vice president Michael Bucheit, who will take on the role of Consonus Labs' general manager.
Consonus executive chairperson Nana Baffour described Consonus Labs as the "innovation engine" to drive Consonus' continued growth as a data center services and solutions provider for mid-enterprise customers. "I am excited that we have found a low-cost virtual model to innovate for our customers' benefit and create intellectual property for the company," he said in a statement. "With the patents pending on Consonus SAFE (Secure eMail Archiving for the Enterprise) and Consonus VBC (Virtual Business Continuity), we have already demonstrated that Consonus Labs — in collaboration with our technology partners like Symantec and BlueLock — can demonstrate tremendous value add for our clients."
Demonstrating its drive to develop new technologies, little more than a month ago, Consonus launched its Virtual Infrastructure Service, a new cloud computing solution that offers secure, highly available virtual environments with the ability to dynamically expand and contract for production environments or for disaster recovery.

October 2009 - Web Hosting's All Star Team
This has been, for us, one of the most interesting, exciting and challenging build-ups to an issue of the magazine yet, Web Hosting's All Star Team. The balloting process was our first experiment with a kind of user participation we're planning to do a lot more with in the months to come. We had thousands of ballots submitted, with hundreds of write-in suggestions and a demonstration of user engagement that has us feeling super positive about the project.

July 2009 - What am I Worth?
One of the interesting luxuries of working on a project like the printed WHIR magazine is that it allows us to play with things like our point of view from one issue to the next. In recent months we've been giving added attention to the kind of practical and applicable advice aimed at smaller hosts and resellers. This issue carries on with that point of view, asking, in our cover story, "what am I worth?" It's a complicated question without a clear-cut answer.

May 2009 - The Blueprint for a Small Web Host
I was a little surprised by how difficult it became to see this idea through. We set out to assemble a blueprint for a small hosting business, but butted up pretty quickly against the general impossibility of covering all the territory that was out there to be covered. The basic constraints of a printed magazine, and the less-than-infinite amount of time we had available forced us to face the fact that we could never produce an exhaustive guide to starting a hosting company.
