.tel Domain 'Sunrise' Approaching

(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) -- Less than a month away from the "sunrise" period launch of the unique .tel top level domain, domain name registrars are preparing for its December 3 launch when trademark owners will be able to launch a .tel Internet site.

UK registrar Domainmonster.com (www.domainmonster.com) is one of a handful of registrars now taking orders for .tel registration for all three phases. The new TLD officially launches on December 3, 2008, when domains will be available only to trademark owners. On February 3, .tel will be more widely available, sold at premium prices for minimum three year terms. After March 24, they will be available to the general public for a regular price and a one year term.

In October, Telnic Limited (www.telnic.org), the registry operator responsible for the new ".tel" top level domain, reported that more than 100 ICANN-accredited registrars have signed up to sell .tel domain names well in advance of the December 3 launch date.

"We're delighted to have Domainmonster.com on board right at the beginning, with the launch of the Sunrise period on December 3, 2008." Telnic chief executive officer Khashayar Mahdavi said in a statement. "The potential impact of .tel on Internet-based communication and directory services, coupled with Domainmonster.com's proven track record at new TLD launches, is a perfect combination to make this a successful partnership."

Unlike a traditional domain, however, .tel stores personal and corporate information as well as indexable keywords, making it essentially like an Internet phone book. Contact information is directly placed in the domain name system information, which can then be universally accessed, compared to the typical the DNS for other TLDs in which the DNS only provides a mapping between domain names and IP addresses.
