Switch and Data to Expand Atlanta Data Center

By Justin Lee, November 03, 2009

(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) -- Data center operator Switch and Data (www.switchanddata.com) announced on Tuesday its plans to expand its data center capacity in Atlanta with its new site at 180 Peachtree Street, as part of its expansion strategy  to meet the growing demand from existing and new customers in the market.

Switch and Data will interconnect this new site to its existing Atlanta site providing immediate access to multiple network service providers.

Particularly after last month's acquisition by Equinix, Switch and Data has strengthened its position as a leading data center operator. The combined organization now operates a total of 79 data centers in 34 markets.

In September 2008, Switch and Data signed a lease for the 180 Peachtree Street site for total term of 15 years, including extensions. The new site is located in well interconnected building which is already in use for data center operations.

The lease brings more than 79,000 gross square feet to Switch and Data's Atlanta Metro data center capacity, bringing a total gross of 106,000 square feet in this market.

The data center expansion is a crucial move for the company, as the Atlanta market has long been an important regional hub where network service providers, content providers, and new technology start-ups interconnect their networks, store information, and distribute content to their customers.

Switch and Data says the new site will be built to the Tier III Uptime Institutes' standards, which include full N+1 redundancy for the UPS, generator and cooling infrastructures, as well as 24-hour security and remote technical support.

The site will be built out in phases based on customer demand. Phase one will comprise of 500 cabinets and open to customers sometime in the third quarter of 2010. In total, the site will hold a total of 1,450 cabinet equivalents when all phases are complete.

"Switch and Data facilities give our customers access to a critical mass of network and bandwidth providers across the broadest footprint of key communications hub markets in North America," says Ernie Sampera, senior vice president and CMO for Switch and Data. "Our Atlanta market expansion builds on our plan to help our customers accelerate their Internet-centric businesses with high performance and availability."

The company will also offer its PAIX Internet exchange service in its new Atlanta site, which provides a cost effective way for ISPs, telecos, and content providers to peer ther IP traffic to enhance performance and reduce cost.

Switch and Data will offer distributed peering between its Atlanta Metro Area locations to provide greater opportunities for customers to reach important networks, partners and customers.

October 2009 - Web Hosting's All Star Team
This has been, for us, one of the most interesting, exciting and challenging build-ups to an issue of the magazine yet, Web Hosting's All Star Team. The balloting process was our first experiment with a kind of user participation we're planning to do a lot more with in the months to come. We had thousands of ballots submitted, with hundreds of write-in suggestions and a demonstration of user engagement that has us feeling super positive about the project.

July 2009 - What am I Worth?
One of the interesting luxuries of working on a project like the printed WHIR magazine is that it allows us to play with things like our point of view from one issue to the next. In recent months we've been giving added attention to the kind of practical and applicable advice aimed at smaller hosts and resellers. This issue carries on with that point of view, asking, in our cover story, "what am I worth?" It's a complicated question without a clear-cut answer.

May 2009 - The Blueprint for a Small Web Host
I was a little surprised by how difficult it became to see this idea through. We set out to assemble a blueprint for a small hosting business, but butted up pretty quickly against the general impossibility of covering all the territory that was out there to be covered. The basic constraints of a printed magazine, and the less-than-infinite amount of time we had available forced us to face the fact that we could never produce an exhaustive guide to starting a hosting company.
