1&1 Removes Traffic Limits On Web Hosting Plans

(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — Web host 1&1 Internet (www.1and1.com) has removed the traffic limits on all its web hosting plans so that customers no longer need to worry about exceeding their monthly traffic allowances.

According to 1&1′s Wednesday announcement, all of its hosting packages now offer an unlimited volume of data for page impressions, downloads and uploads of files, giving its shared hosting solutions added flexibility.

The unlimited traffic offer extends to customers on any shared hosting, eShop or combination package, ensuring that any website hosted by 1&1 can continue to function optimally as the site’s popularity grows.

Earlier this month, 1&1 loosened traffic limits on its “Home,” “Business,” “Business Pro,” and “Developer” shared hosting packages and upgraded their web storage space by as much as five times. In promoting the newly upgraded packages, 1&1 is offering each package at half-price for a limited time.

Offering an “unlimited” service to a customer base of millions may very well tax the company’s infrastructure, however, this offering relies on the fact that most sites don’t even come close to their traffic limits. And while this tactic of “overselling” shared hosting, which some consider a dubious practice, may not, in fact, hold up to millions of users running bandwidth-heavy applications, 1&1 has likely factored into the offering that some users will exploit the “unlimited” offering, while others simply run the websites they would have normally.

Also, the “unlimited” label is a great marketing strategy that plays on clients’ aspirations that their simple website will someday be visited by millions.
