1&1 Internet Invests 12M Euro in IDC

March 10, 2003 — (WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — European Web hosting and domain registration service provider 1&1 Internet (OneandOne.co.uk) announced on Monday that it is expanding its operations, opening a brand new 12 million euro data center, in Karlsruhe, Germany.

Confirmed as the largest Web hosting data center in Europe, says 1&1, Data Centre IV will host 25,000 servers, with provisioning for 52,800 high end machines, and offer 7,000 Mbit connectivity. According to 1&1, the facility will host one in three German Web sites, and one in ten English Web sites.

1&1 says the new Data Center’s unique architecture sets new standards in performance, security, safety and power. A new cooling system was commissioned, with every pipe weld x-rayed in accordance with nuclear power station guidelines. Every visitor to the data center must have a valid keycard and code, and will also be photographed and weighed in an airlock to verify identity. There are more than 120 cameras onsite. And visitors are weighed again when exiting to ensure that nothing has been left or removed.
