10M Sites Run F5 BIG-IP: Netcraft

The F5 BIG-IP serves 4.26 percent of all websites, and around 3.8 percent of the top million sites, according to UK research and security provider Netcraft.

(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — According to Netcraft’s (www.netcraft.com) most recent Web Server Survey, more than 10 million websites were found to be running the BIG-IP network appliance, F5 Networks’ (www.f5.com) flagship product.

Originally a network load balancer, the F5 BIG-IP has grown to offer more features such as access control and application security, as well as add-on modules offering email filtering and compression to offer lower bandwidth and faster downloads.

F5′s BIG-IP product family also uses the TMOS platform to provide a modular approach to traffic management.

Serving 4.26 percent of all websites, and around 3.8 percent of the top million sites, F5 BIG-IP devices are used by popular sites such as Facebook, Bank of America and Adobe, according to UK research and security provider Netcraft.

Netcraft reported that F5 BIG-IP is particularly popular in the UK, where it is used to serve 13.8 percent of websites. It is, however, only found on 0.42 percent of the web-facing computers in the UK, showing that BIG-IP deployments are commonly used to host a large number of websites by a relatively small number of front-end devices.
