Consonus Joins Green Grid, Launches Green Initiatives

  • By Justin Lee, October 26, 2009

(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) -- Data center solutions provider Consonus Technologies (www.consonus.com) announced on Monday it has recently enrolled in several programs related to the company's energy efficiency, as well as highlighted its other green initiatives.

First, Consonus joined The Green Grid (www.thegreengrid.org), a global organization that focuses on advancing energy efficiency in data centers and business computing ecosystems by making industry-wide recommendations on best practices, metrics and technologies.

By joining The Green Grid, Consonus is helping influence both developers and end users of data center technology.

The company has also joined Rocky Mountain Power's (www.rockymountainpower.net) Blue Sky Program, at the "Visionary" level. Through the program, companies can help support regional wind energy, and encourage the development of small, community-based renewable energy projects in the company's service area, such as solar power.

Consonus has also deployed two energy-efficient technologies. The first, high-effiencency cooling, includes closed loop cooling systems and clean chilled water cooled versus DX-type systems.

The solutions provide hot aisle/cold aisle management to more efficiently manage power in the CRAC units of Consonus data centers, the use of himneys to more efficiently capture return air for cooling, additional physical structures to better contain the hot and cold air in its specified aisle, computational fluid dynamic modeling to better understand data center airflow, and Consonus-developed swamp cooling systems installed on rooftop units to improve energy efficiency by over 25 percent.

The company is also using efficient lighting throughout Consonus facilities, including F32T8 Fluorescent Light Bulbs, which are some of the most energy-efficient bulbs available. The bulbs have helped Consonus reduce its monthly power cost.

"Energy efficiency is both good business and good corporate citizenship; it' a win/win for business at all levels at which it operates: financial, operational, environmental, and community. Rarely are business solutions so holistically viable and compelling across all of these constituencies," says John Roger, co-president of Consonus. "As 'Green IT' becomes a strategic imperative and no longer a 'nice to have', Consonus is well-positioned to be the energy-efficient data center provider of choice."
