Tata Offers Managed Security Service

October 24, 2008 -- (WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) -- According to several reports on Friday, India-based telecommunications giant Tata Communications  (www.tatacommunications.com) has partnered with unified threat management solutions provider Fortinet (www.fortinet.com) to launch virtualized UTM to its customers in India.

The company says it is the first service provider to offer this kind of service in its area and is integrating critical security functions including firewall, intrusion detection and prevention, anti-virus, anti-spam, and web content filtering as part of its Managed Security Services portfolio.

As a result of this offering, Tata says customers can rely on increased network security without having to invest in expensive on-premise security hardware. The solution is primarily targeted at customers who require a secure Internet gateway with a preference for a hosted security appliance instead of a locally installed firewall in their premises.

"Businesses that depend on the Internet for operations are struggling to balance the need to adequately address security issues with budget realities," said Adam Rice, VP of global managed security services for Tata Communications in a company statement. "Tata Communications' vUTM service changes the whole cost equation by eliminating the cost of customer premise equipment and providing monitoring and management services to enhance the security value beyond what many enterprises are accustomed to. For organizations with remote locations requiring secure Internet connectivity, our vUTM service delivers high value and very low cost of ownership."

Expansion of this offering to other regions is expected in the near future. However, a more specific release date remains undisclosed.

With the almost 100 subsidiaries in industries as diverse as tea and steel, Tata's hosting services are becoming a major world-wide player with more than one million square feet of data center and colocation facilities worldwide.

Considering the international presence this company has in this market, it seems Tata Communications has been flying relatively under the radar until only recently when it began making a major push in its North American marketing for its managed services.

Earlier this month, Tata Communications reported it had partnered with non-profit organization the Internet Systems Consortium to provide IP version 6 hosting services for enterprise businesses and service providers.

And in September, Tata announced the worldwide launch of its BitGravity CDN service as well as its expanded global virtual private network Extended Access Service to enable customers in more than 150 countries access to a cost-effective solution that does not require dedicated links.
