(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) -- Web hosting provider PEER 1 Network Enterprises (www.peer1.com) announced on Friday that 88 percent of IT decision makers do not use cloud technologies, while 39 percent said that their lack of knowledge is preventing them from adopting cloud computing, according to an independent study commissioned on PEER 1's behalf.
The independent study surveyed over 200 IT decision makers about their attitudes on cloud computing. The study showed that 24 percent of respondents were reluctant to adopt cloud computing because they believe there might be a lack of security, while 21 percent perceive that lack of control outweighs the benefits of cloud hosting.
Still, despite these concerns, 49 percent of respondents say that they are considering the technology.
Cloud computing's availability and reliability are seen as key benefits for 69 percent of those surveyed, while another 63 percent are drawn to its performance benefits.
Scalability and flexibility are both factors that appeal to over 60 percent of potential cloud hosting users, with 43 percent said that security is one of the main reasons to choose cloud hosting.
"We commissioned this study in order to get a clear view of the perceptions surrounding cloud hosting," says Tim Varma, director of product management at PEER 1. "We were surprised by the degree to which confusion about the benefits and limitations of cloud hosting seem to prevail, often conflicting with each other. For example, the security of cloud hosting appealed to 43 percent of decision makers – whilst 23 percent cite their perceived lack of security as a deterrent."
“More needs to be done to explain the benefits and address the concerns surrounding cloud technologies if the uptake is to accelerate. Cloud can reduce costs and increase flexibility for businesses, which is appealing for any IT decision maker. The industry needs to work together to provide standards that will address concerns around security and compliance.”
The study is of particular interest to a company like PEER 1, which has been active in the cloud computing market. Earlier this year, the company launched its CloudXcelerator program to strengthen and support the growth of cloud computing.
The CloudXcelerator program lets qualifying partners to develop, test and run cloud applications on PEER 1’s high performance 10GB SuperNetwork infrastructure, helping them to realize the benefits of cloud technologies faster, more reliably and more cost-effectively, says the company.
In February, Hosting.com released its own study on cloud computing attitudes, which gave insight into the expectations businesses have of cloud computing, their intended uses, reasons for adopting, and expected time-frames for implementing cloud-based solutions.

October 2009 - Web Hosting's All Star Team
This has been, for us, one of the most interesting, exciting and challenging build-ups to an issue of the magazine yet, Web Hosting's All Star Team. The balloting process was our first experiment with a kind of user participation we're planning to do a lot more with in the months to come. We had thousands of ballots submitted, with hundreds of write-in suggestions and a demonstration of user engagement that has us feeling super positive about the project.

July 2009 - What am I Worth?
One of the interesting luxuries of working on a project like the printed WHIR magazine is that it allows us to play with things like our point of view from one issue to the next. In recent months we've been giving added attention to the kind of practical and applicable advice aimed at smaller hosts and resellers. This issue carries on with that point of view, asking, in our cover story, "what am I worth?" It's a complicated question without a clear-cut answer.

May 2009 - The Blueprint for a Small Web Host
I was a little surprised by how difficult it became to see this idea through. We set out to assemble a blueprint for a small hosting business, but butted up pretty quickly against the general impossibility of covering all the territory that was out there to be covered. The basic constraints of a printed magazine, and the less-than-infinite amount of time we had available forced us to face the fact that we could never produce an exhaustive guide to starting a hosting company.
