October 21, 2008 -- (WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) -- UK Web hosting provider EZPZ Hosting (www.ezpzhosting.co.uk) now offers "carbon negative" Web hosting services, enabling customers to reduce their carbon footprint beyond neutral, according a company announcement Tuesday.
According to EZPZ, the company has taken the lead in the hosting sector to become the world's first Web hosting company to achieve recognition from Planet Positive (www.planet-positive.org), a global organization aiming to address climate change. Planet Positive has created a stamp of approval for people, products, businesses and cities that have measured and reduced their carbon footprint and have gone beyond neutral status by offsetting their remaining footprint by at least 110 percent.
Working with UK carbon and sustainability consulting firm dcarbon8 (www.dcarbon8.com), EZPZ has measured the carbon footprint of its business, made a commitment to reduce it on an annual basis, and offset it by 110 percent by funding verified carbon projects. Specifically, EZPZ has committed funding to a variety of alternative energy projects in developing nations including a wind power project in India, a small hydroelectric installation in Brazil and solar panels for schools in South Africa.
"The obligation of corporate citizenship has been the driving force in our decision to become Planet Positive," EZPZ Hosting director Daniel Butcher said in a statement. "We wanted to provide a green Web hosting service to clients who not only wanted to receive robust Web hosting services but also who want to make a meaningful contribution to our planet."
While it may be the first to call itself carbon negative, EZPZ's green initiative is comparable to Host Gator's (www.hostgator.com) late August purchase of renewable energy credits to account for 130 percent of its electricity used to power and cool its shared and reseller servers. Also, all of Houston-based HostGator's RECs specifically support wind power generated in Texas.

This has been, for us, one of the most interesting, exciting and challenging build-ups to an issue of the magazine yet, Web Hosting's All Star Team. The balloting process was our first experiment with a kind of user participation we're planning to do a lot more with in the months to come. We had thousands of ballots submitted, with hundreds of write-in suggestions and a demonstration of user engagement that has us feeling super positive about the project.

July 2009 - What am I Worth?
One of the interesting luxuries of working on a project like the printed WHIR magazine is that it allows us to play with things like our point of view from one issue to the next. In recent months we've been giving added attention to the kind of practical and applicable advice aimed at smaller hosts and resellers. This issue carries on with that point of view, asking, in our cover story, "what am I worth?" It's a complicated question without a clear-cut answer.

May 2009 - The Blueprint for a Small Web Host
I was a little surprised by how difficult it became to see this idea through. We set out to assemble a blueprint for a small hosting business, but butted up pretty quickly against the general impossibility of covering all the territory that was out there to be covered. The basic constraints of a printed magazine, and the less-than-infinite amount of time we had available forced us to face the fact that we could never produce an exhaustive guide to starting a hosting company.

Im a customer of EZPZs and they've been green since the end of July - so they did beat Hostgator to it
