HP Tops Green Data Center Study

October 15, 2008 -- (WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) -- Hewlett-Packard (www.hp.com) has been ranked at the top of the latest "Green Data Center" Vendor Matrix, an analytical tool developed by ABI Research (www.abiresearch.com) as a clear rating of vendor position in specific markets.

According to ABI Research's announcement Wednesday, IBM (www.ibm.com) and Cisco (www.cisco.com) claimed the second and third spots respectively in the company's new evaluation of data center equipment vendor efforts to improve energy conservation and reduce environmental impact.

ABI Research's new evaluation method is the latest in a field that is growing in visibility and momentum as organizations like The Green Grid (www.thegreengrid.org) have been making strides in developing similar metrics and best practices for data centers. Also, LEED and Energy Star certifications have also provided guidance for data center operators on how to develop greener IT strategies. In May, data center operator Digital Realty Trust (www.digitalrealty.com) said it was the first data center firm to publish energy efficiency data about its facilities using the Power Usage Effectiveness metric.

ABI Research's Vendor Matrix assesses on the parameters of "innovation" and "implementation." For this matrix, under "innovation," ABI Research examined the firms' carbon footprints, regulatory compliance, recycling efforts, efforts at "greening" internal operations, their use of video and telecommuting, and their membership and participation in environmental organizations. Under "implementation," ABI Research rated the firms' product portfolios and features, intellectual property holdings, certification achievements, and use of planning and virtualization tools.

"HP should be complimented for its extensive internal green efforts," ABI Research vice president and research director Stan Schatt said in a statement. "While it has not received quite the publicity of IBM's Big Green efforts, the company has perhaps the most extensive list of carbon goals of any vendor, with clear accountability each year on which goals have been met. Cisco's focus on network switching and storage means that it cannot offer quite as broad a portfolio of products and services under one roof but must rely on vendor partners to fill technology gaps and channel partners to provide integration services. Still, Cisco joins HP at the top of any listing of vendors' internal green efforts."

This Green Data Center Vendor Matrix is one of three new ABI Vendor Matrices related to green networking practices including evaluations of WiFi and switching equipment.

October 2009 - Web Hosting's All Star Team
This has been, for us, one of the most interesting, exciting and challenging build-ups to an issue of the magazine yet, Web Hosting's All Star Team. The balloting process was our first experiment with a kind of user participation we're planning to do a lot more with in the months to come. We had thousands of ballots submitted, with hundreds of write-in suggestions and a demonstration of user engagement that has us feeling super positive about the project.

July 2009 - What am I Worth?
One of the interesting luxuries of working on a project like the printed WHIR magazine is that it allows us to play with things like our point of view from one issue to the next. In recent months we've been giving added attention to the kind of practical and applicable advice aimed at smaller hosts and resellers. This issue carries on with that point of view, asking, in our cover story, "what am I worth?" It's a complicated question without a clear-cut answer.

May 2009 - The Blueprint for a Small Web Host
I was a little surprised by how difficult it became to see this idea through. We set out to assemble a blueprint for a small hosting business, but butted up pretty quickly against the general impossibility of covering all the territory that was out there to be covered. The basic constraints of a printed magazine, and the less-than-infinite amount of time we had available forced us to face the fact that we could never produce an exhaustive guide to starting a hosting company.
