(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) -- Furthering its goal of perfecting the media experience, GooMe Interactive (www.goome.com), which provides media solutions for operators, has recently launched the M Cube content management solution, providing a turnkey solution for managing any content - TV, online video, music, websites, social networking, widgets and more - which can be experienced by users on any screen - TV, PC or mobile.
GooMe's "Over The Top" home entertainment services are so called because they are delivered on top of a broadband network. Based on nearly a decade of experience working with an impressive list of operators such as Vodafone, Orange, and Tata Sky, GooMe launched M Cube last month in Amsterdam at electronic media forum IBC (www.ibc.org), offering Internet service providers a gateway to the content management market or for existing operators to enrich their offerings.
"GooMe takes all types of digital content and merges them into one, unified, very holistic solution that simplifies the browsing experience in the living room," GooMe Interactive chief executive officer Danny Peled said. "What we're trying to do is to take the live channel, it can be from any IP stream - it can be from terrestrial television (with the rise of digital terrestrial television everywhere in the world) we believe that many services in the world will rely on digital television and we're trying to enhance them with digital content.”
GooMe's M Cube turnkey media and content management solution now enables ISPs to bundle TV with their offerings, taking advantage of the new market opportunities, while providing their customers TV, Web and home media content over TV, PC and mobile through any set-top box.
Peled notes that end users of M Cube see no GooMe branding, making it a service companies can offer as their own. "We are a white label company - our aim is to help the ISPs or the companies we will be engaged with to promote their own brands,” he says. “As far as we're concerned, there's no need for our logo."
With consumers looking for bundled content offerings from their service providers, GooMe enables operators to fight the challenges of cable cutting alternatives with an Over The Top media solution providing a range of revenue-generating TV and Web offerings that are easy to implement and easy for users to access
M Cube makes live broadcast channels; video on demand; web-based video content from YouTube and CNN.com; widgets and social networking websites such as Twitter, Picasa, Flickr, weather, and stocks; interactive games; and streaming of home content including videos, images and more available to users' TV, PC and mobile screens. As well, the targeted ad infrastructure and the advanced profiling, recommendation engine and personalization capabilities provide operators with additional revenue streams to increase the revenue made from each user.
"It all goes down to convergence," Peled says. "Everyone is trying to provide full supplemental services, media services, which are the Internet, mobile, and TV, and we see that already happening - that ISPs are either merging with telco companies or creating their own virtual entities as mobile portals and TV operators. So, we help them provide that TV section."
In a recent study of the OTT market conducted by The Diffusion Group, 43 percent of the more than 2,000 adults surveyed perceive the service value of their Pay TV service to be “poor.” Among this same sample, 67.3 percent are interested in replacing or supplementing their existing broadband service with an OTT service.
Service providers offering a good product that is easy to use are signing up customers faster than any of the free or lower priced cable alternatives. Most users don't want an “out of the box TV solution” but instead want their service provider to set up their set top box for them. And as the better service providers have shown, TV programming can significantly increase average revenue per user, an indicator of the value of a bundled TV offering for service providers.
GooMe can offer M Cube integrated with a set top box from partner AirTies, but is able to integrate M Cube with any other set top box. And with 2.5 set top boxes per household in Isreal and similar penetration in Western Europe, Peled says, there are few barriers in place.
With an abundance of broadband communications infrastructure available, GooMe see tremendous potential for offering OTT services over the existing managed broadband network infrastructure provided by Telcos and others, eliminating the need for operators to build and manage their own broadband infrastructure.

This has been, for us, one of the most interesting, exciting and challenging build-ups to an issue of the magazine yet, Web Hosting's All Star Team. The balloting process was our first experiment with a kind of user participation we're planning to do a lot more with in the months to come. We had thousands of ballots submitted, with hundreds of write-in suggestions and a demonstration of user engagement that has us feeling super positive about the project.

One of the interesting luxuries of working on a project like the printed WHIR magazine is that it allows us to play with things like our point of view from one issue to the next. In recent months we've been giving added attention to the kind of practical and applicable advice aimed at smaller hosts and resellers. This issue carries on with that point of view, asking, in our cover story, "what am I worth?" It's a complicated question without a clear-cut answer.

May 2009 - The Blueprint for a Small Web Host
I was a little surprised by how difficult it became to see this idea through. We set out to assemble a blueprint for a small hosting business, but butted up pretty quickly against the general impossibility of covering all the territory that was out there to be covered. The basic constraints of a printed magazine, and the less-than-infinite amount of time we had available forced us to face the fact that we could never produce an exhaustive guide to starting a hosting company.
