October 8, 2008 -- (WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) -- Web hosting provider The Planet (www.theplanet.com) announced on Wednesday it has launched Planet Alpha Bargain Bin (www.planetalpha.com/bargain-bin/), which features overstocked and clearance dedicated servers in a range of configurations.

As a permanent addition to The Planet's website, the discounted servers provide customers are available on a revolving basis with prices starting at $45 per month.

In November 2007, web hosting infrastructure provider iWeb released its own dedicated server clearance warehouse range of discounted dedicated servers.

Selected from the Planet Alpha dedicated server fleet, the Bargain Bin servers continuously rotate based on availability, customer demand and data center space. Customers can search for servers by processor and drive-controller type, hard disk space, memory capacity and price.

The company launched its Planet Alpha Dedicated Servers division in July, offering a wider range of self-managed dedicated servers and new advanced services.

The servers include The Planet's full range of software options, including operating system and control panel choices. All servers purchased from the Bargain Bin are backed by The Planet's Service Level Agreement, 24-hour support, and world-class network and data centers.

"We have more than 22,000 customers worldwide, so The Planet's size and scale allow us to purchase thousands of name-brand servers at preferred discount pricing," says Urvish Vashi, The Planet's general manager for dedicated servers. "Many of these servers are now available at even deeper discounted rates in the Bargain Bin, and they come from each of our six SAS 70 Type II-certified data centers. Customers still receive the world-class service and support they expect from The Planet, backed by our enterprise-class network."

Customers can also add Alpha Advanced Services to any Bargain Bin server to supplement the administration and maintenance of their servers. Starting at $25 per month per server, the services include Alpha Servers Monitoring, Alpha Servers Security and Alpha Servers Administration.

The Planet says it will update the Bargain Bin on a frequent basis, continuously adding new servers. The company notes that servers must be purchased as configured, and that changes cannot be made to existing hardware for the life of the server.

Last week, energy and life sciences software developer Stone Bond Technologies selected The Planet to provide the core platform for its software test bed.
