September 30, 2008 -- (WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) -- Web analytics firm Netcraft (netcraft.com) announced on Tuesday that it has released the results of its September 2008 Web Server Survey.

According to the most recent report, the Web has grown by 4.5 million sites, totaling 181,277,835 sites, more than three-quarters of which are using Apache.

This puts Apache at more than 91 million sites, while Microsoft?s share dropped to 34 percent this month, to 62,374,823 sites.

Many of the new Apache sites, which saw a growth of 2.6 million sites this past month, are hosted at ThePlanet.com, says Netcraft. Interestingly, "hundreds of thousands" of the new sites at ThePlanet.com are link farms hosted on Polish domain names and "contain little more than pornographic text links to other sites within the same domain."

18,000 Apache sites can be credited to photo hosting provider SmugMug (smugmug.com), whose customers use the service to display and sell their photographs through SmugMug's checkout solution. SmugMug also has a partnership with Go Daddy to enable users to register custom domain names, which can be used to point to their galleries, which are usually in the form nickname.smugmug.com.

Resin (www.caucho.com), an application server product from Caucho Technology, which produces high performance open source Java and PHP solutions, is now the 12th most popular web server in the world, says Netcraft, and has grown significantly this month, powering around 343,000 sites. Most of the Resin-powered sites are hosted at Panther IT Services in the Netherlands.

In Netcraft's August 2008 Web Server Survey, the Web saw a growth of 1.3 million sites due to 1.2 million Apache sites and half-a-million Google sites, despite Microsoft IIS losing 60,000 sites.
