FastServers Secures cPanel Servers

September 27, 2006 -- (WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) -- Web hosting provider FastServers.Net (fastservers.net) said Tuesday it has finalized a large update effort, securing more than 900 cPanel servers in less than 48 hours. The cPanel exploit, which can redirect Web site visitors to another site - attempts to hijack Internet Explorer users operating unpatched browsers.

When the cPanel exploit became public on September 23, FastServers' support engineers immediately began to update over 900 managed dedicated servers. In less than 18 hours, says FastServers, the security response team patched over 900 servers, averaging 50 per hour.

FastServers has distributed cPanel since 1997 and has offered managed dedicated servers since 2001. As one of the most widely used control panels, cPanel is the leading Linux control panel purchased by new dedicated server owners at FastServers.

"It was important that we quickly assemble a team to insure the security of our managed clients, this exploit could have damaged servers and caused an embarrassment to Web site owners worldwide," says Matt Doyle, director of West operations for FastServers. "I am very pleased with our security response team's ability to provide what I consider record breaking deployment of the patch."
