(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) -- Web hosting provider Green Geeks (www.greengeeks.com) announced on Tuesday it has purchased renewable energy credits, as well as joined the US Environmental Protection Agency's Green Power Partnership (www.epa.gov/grnpower).
The company bought more than 48,000kWh of renewable energy certificates annually from Bonneville Environmental Foundation.
The credits supply enough green power to meet 300 percent of its electricity usage.
"This is a huge honor and we are proud to be recognized by the US Environmental Protection Agency," says Trey Gardner, Green Geeks CEO. "We've always been diligent and we've worked hard to make Green Geeks the most eco friendly company we could be. When the EPA contacted us we were pleased to find out that companies like ours could get the support of the EPA through their Green Power Partner Program. We look forward to working with the EPA and their Program to further the cause for more companies to go green."
The purchase of renewable energy certificates help support the development of renewable energy generation sources around the country, such as wind, solar, geothermal, biogas, biomass and low-impact hydro.
Some groups and individuals believe that buying renewable energy certificates or carbon offsets are merely a quick-fix solution, improving a company's image without it actually reducing its own carbon emissions or directly use renewable energy sources.
However, others say that participating in a carbon offset program at least shows that a company is aware of its ecological footprint, and is sometimes the only option for companies that cannot access renewable access in their area.
The voluntary-based Green Power Partnership supports the adoption of green power. The EPA offers expert advice, technical support, tools and resources to organizations on how they can reduce the transaction costs of buying green power, reduce their carbon footprint, and communicate these ecological issues to stakeholders.

October 2009 - Web Hosting's All Star Team
This has been, for us, one of the most interesting, exciting and challenging build-ups to an issue of the magazine yet, Web Hosting's All Star Team. The balloting process was our first experiment with a kind of user participation we're planning to do a lot more with in the months to come. We had thousands of ballots submitted, with hundreds of write-in suggestions and a demonstration of user engagement that has us feeling super positive about the project.

July 2009 - What am I Worth?
One of the interesting luxuries of working on a project like the printed WHIR magazine is that it allows us to play with things like our point of view from one issue to the next. In recent months we've been giving added attention to the kind of practical and applicable advice aimed at smaller hosts and resellers. This issue carries on with that point of view, asking, in our cover story, "what am I worth?" It's a complicated question without a clear-cut answer.

May 2009 - The Blueprint for a Small Web Host
I was a little surprised by how difficult it became to see this idea through. We set out to assemble a blueprint for a small hosting business, but butted up pretty quickly against the general impossibility of covering all the territory that was out there to be covered. The basic constraints of a printed magazine, and the less-than-infinite amount of time we had available forced us to face the fact that we could never produce an exhaustive guide to starting a hosting company.
