September 17, 2008 -- (WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) -- Web hosting and on-demand data center services provider SoftLayer (softlayer.com) announced it will use and offer the new Citrix Cloud Center (or C3) solution from Citrix Systems (citrix.com) as a key part of its cloud computing strategy.
According to SoftLayer's announcement Tuesday, adding C3's capabilities will strengthen SoftLayer's automation and further the company's virtualization vision to transform the data center industry. Citrix's C3 product suite includes a complete set of service delivery infrastructure for cloud computing.
According to the announcement, the first component of the suite adopted by SoftLayer will be Citrix XenServer Cloud Edition, a server virtualization solution that enables customers to create virtual data center environments.
XenServer, powered by the Xen hypervisor includes an easy-to-use management console that, like Vmware and Microsoft's hypervisor products, can provision and manage any number of physical and virtual machines across a data center.
"Partnering with Citrix was an easy decision. It's clear they are listening to enterprises and cloud service providers -- these solutions meet and exceed the needs of this rapidly-evolving IT segment," Softlayer chief technology officer Nathan Day said in a statement. "The flexibility and scalability of Citrix XenServer allows us to deliver advanced virtualization today. And the full Citrix C3 solution will allow us to deliver the cloud computing of tomorrow."
Earlier this week, utility computing technology developer 3Tera (3tera.com) announced it would pair Citrix's C3 solution with 3Tera's AppLogic cloud computing platform to make enterprise-grade cloud solutions available in either external hosted clouds, or as a platform that can be deployed in corporate data centers behind customer firewalls. This would allow entire virtual data centers and applications to operate on the cloud.

This has been, for us, one of the most interesting, exciting and challenging build-ups to an issue of the magazine yet, Web Hosting's All Star Team. The balloting process was our first experiment with a kind of user participation we're planning to do a lot more with in the months to come. We had thousands of ballots submitted, with hundreds of write-in suggestions and a demonstration of user engagement that has us feeling super positive about the project.

July 2009 - What am I Worth?
One of the interesting luxuries of working on a project like the printed WHIR magazine is that it allows us to play with things like our point of view from one issue to the next. In recent months we've been giving added attention to the kind of practical and applicable advice aimed at smaller hosts and resellers. This issue carries on with that point of view, asking, in our cover story, "what am I worth?" It's a complicated question without a clear-cut answer.

May 2009 - The Blueprint for a Small Web Host
I was a little surprised by how difficult it became to see this idea through. We set out to assemble a blueprint for a small hosting business, but butted up pretty quickly against the general impossibility of covering all the territory that was out there to be covered. The basic constraints of a printed magazine, and the less-than-infinite amount of time we had available forced us to face the fact that we could never produce an exhaustive guide to starting a hosting company.
