The Planet Launches New, Three-Tiered Channel Program

By David Hamilton, September 15, 2009

(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) -- IT hosting provider The Planet (www.theplanet.com) has announced its new "Partner Plus" program, offering industry-leading commission rates and access to a portal with a range of marketing and sales tools.

According to The Planet's Tuesday announcement, the Partner Plus includes three specific partner models designed to fit the business requirements of its customers: Referral Partners, Reseller Partners and Affiliates.

Referral Partners earn up to 20 percent commissions based on deal size and the total business referred to The Planet. Reseller Partners purchase products and services to resell to customers, benefiting from The Planet's buying power, with volume-based server discounts. Finally, the Affiliate category gives members who link customers or website visitors to The Planet 100 percent of a referred customer's first month's bill.

"As other hosting companies and colocation providers are cutting back their programs, The Planet is making significant investments in Partner Plus to build indirect sales and leverage the power of the channel to expand our market reach," The Planet global sales vice president Tom Blair said in a statement. "Today marks a strategic expansion in our already-successful partner program."

The Planet opened its entire product portfolio to partners earlier this year, letting them earn commissions or server discounts on one of the broadest portfolios of products and services in the industry, including colocation, advanced services and dedicated hosting, all the way to fully managed hosting, virtualization and cloud services.

Tenko Nikolov, chief executive officer of web host and The Planet partner SiteGround (www.siteground.com) said its global customer base relies on the most cutting-edge reliability and connectivity solutions to operate their businesses. "Our business continues to grow, as does our relationship with The Planet," Nikolov said in a statement. "Their commitment to customer support and attention to our requirements makes them an ideal partner for our company, and those are among the reasons we work with The Planet."

Blair concluded, "We set about to reshape the partner landscape, with the most lucrative and creative program in the industry, backed by a dream team of sales, technical and support personnel committed to partners' success. I've been in the industry for more than 25 years, and this is the program I've always envisioned being able to offer."

October 2009 - Web Hosting's All Star Team
This has been, for us, one of the most interesting, exciting and challenging build-ups to an issue of the magazine yet, Web Hosting's All Star Team. The balloting process was our first experiment with a kind of user participation we're planning to do a lot more with in the months to come. We had thousands of ballots submitted, with hundreds of write-in suggestions and a demonstration of user engagement that has us feeling super positive about the project.

July 2009 - What am I Worth?
One of the interesting luxuries of working on a project like the printed WHIR magazine is that it allows us to play with things like our point of view from one issue to the next. In recent months we've been giving added attention to the kind of practical and applicable advice aimed at smaller hosts and resellers. This issue carries on with that point of view, asking, in our cover story, "what am I worth?" It's a complicated question without a clear-cut answer.

May 2009 - The Blueprint for a Small Web Host
I was a little surprised by how difficult it became to see this idea through. We set out to assemble a blueprint for a small hosting business, but butted up pretty quickly against the general impossibility of covering all the territory that was out there to be covered. The basic constraints of a printed magazine, and the less-than-infinite amount of time we had available forced us to face the fact that we could never produce an exhaustive guide to starting a hosting company.
