(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) -- Internet infrastructure services provider Afilias (www.afilias.info) has launched, SiteCertain, a new add-on feature to its managed Domain Name System services, enabling Afilias Managed DNS customers to add web server monitoring, content monitoring and IP address fail-over to their Managed DNS account, to ensure the reliability and uptime of their websites.
According to Afilias' Tuesday announcement, SiteCertain monitors customer web servers continuously from more than 40 locations worldwide. It dynamically updates DNS records from up to nine additional back-up IP addresses so domain names always point to a functional server. SiteCertain also checks for user-specified page content, so not only are customers certain that their pages are loading, but that they are appearing exactly as they should, without errors.
"Customers using the Afilias DNS network already have 100 percent reliability guaranteed for managing their DNS," Afilias corporate services vice president John Kane said in a statement. "Now with SiteCertain, customers can add the peace of mind of knowing they will always have an emergency failover plan to handle a variety of scenarios, such as web server failures or problems with properly loading content, that would preclude customers from reaching their website."
Customers can manage their SiteCertain settings through the web-based Afilias Managed DNS interface, where they can specify IP fail-over addresses, monitoring intervals, verification of webpage content, and email or SMS notification/alerts. According to the company, a variety of price plans are available for Afilias Managed DNS customers to add SiteCertain to their existing DNS account.
SiteCertain is the latest update to Afilias' Managed DNS service, which launched in February, providing a global DNS network and support of 15 popular registries such as .info, .org and .me. WHIR-TV recently talked with Kane about what managed DNS can offer businesses.

October 2009 - Web Hosting's All Star Team
This has been, for us, one of the most interesting, exciting and challenging build-ups to an issue of the magazine yet, Web Hosting's All Star Team. The balloting process was our first experiment with a kind of user participation we're planning to do a lot more with in the months to come. We had thousands of ballots submitted, with hundreds of write-in suggestions and a demonstration of user engagement that has us feeling super positive about the project.

July 2009 - What am I Worth?
One of the interesting luxuries of working on a project like the printed WHIR magazine is that it allows us to play with things like our point of view from one issue to the next. In recent months we've been giving added attention to the kind of practical and applicable advice aimed at smaller hosts and resellers. This issue carries on with that point of view, asking, in our cover story, "what am I worth?" It's a complicated question without a clear-cut answer.

May 2009 - The Blueprint for a Small Web Host
I was a little surprised by how difficult it became to see this idea through. We set out to assemble a blueprint for a small hosting business, but butted up pretty quickly against the general impossibility of covering all the territory that was out there to be covered. The basic constraints of a printed magazine, and the less-than-infinite amount of time we had available forced us to face the fact that we could never produce an exhaustive guide to starting a hosting company.
