September 12, 2008 -- (WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) -- According to a new survey of IT professionals, 91 percent of organizations identify cybercrime as a major business risk and one out of four respondents have experienced a security breech first hand.

Conducted by enterprise web gateway security provider Finjan (finjan.com), the new security survey is based on the responses of 1387 IT and security professionals in July 2008. The results reveal a majority of respondents perceive cybercrime as a major business risk, specifically sensitive information such as customer, patient and employee data being stolen by crimeware. An overwhelming 95 percent of banking and financial sector respondents identified cybercrime as posing a major business risk.

Almost three-quarters of all CIOs and CSOs polled were more concerned about data theft than about downtime and loss of productivity due to virus infections. Also, 68 percent of respondents said their corporate intellectual property and sensitive information is at risk of data theft. Healthcare providers listed their patient`s medical records as the main target of cybercrime.

While 25 percent reported their data had been breached, an alarming 42 percent reported not knowing if a breach had occurred.

"As the web has become the major malware infection channel, crimeware-filtering capability has become a critical component in organizations` web security strategy," Finjan chief technology officer Yuval Ben-Itzhak said in a statement. "Today, more and more corporate data is at risk of being stolen by cybercriminals."

A majority of those knowledgeable about web security listed "real-time content inspection technology" as their preferred security solution.
