September 10, 2008 -- (WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) -- Software as a service delivery provider OpSource (opsource.net) announced this week that it is hosting a webinar entitled "Softletter's annual SaaS Survey," which will preview new developments in the rapidly growing SaaS sector, as well as the best practices of successful SaaS companies.

Held on September 24 at 9 a.m. PST, the seminar will feature Rick Chapman, publisher and managing editor of Softletter (softletter.com), business insights and hard data for software developers and publishers, who will unveil viewers preliminary results of the 2008 SaaS Survey.

The presentation will cover a range of SaaS industry trends, including sales compensation models and best practices, infrastructure, pricing and purchasing models, SLA and escrow issues, the importance of reseller channels, marketing SaaS products and direct sales versus indirect methods, the impact of SaaS on product management, and open source within SaaS.

Interested individuals can register for the webinar here, while eligible SaaS companies can participate in the survey here.

OpSource has conducted SaaS industry surveys in the past.  The 2008 edition of the industry standard SaaS survey targets software developers and publishers who are currently selling SaaS products in the commercial software marketplace.

In order to qualify for the survey, which features 75 to 90 questions about SaaS, at least 50 percent of the company's revenue must be derived from sales of SaaS systems and services.

Chapman will then present detailed analyses of the results in his presentation at "SaaS University: Marketing, Sales, Infrastructure and Finance Conferences, 2008" (softletter.com/pages/market_and_selling_saas_agenda.shtml) in San Francisco on October 16.

Earlier this year, OpSource held its third annual SaaS Summit in San Francisco, California, designed to help SaaS, on-demand and web companies optimize their success in the web software industry.

October 2009 - Web Hosting's All Star Team
This has been, for us, one of the most interesting, exciting and challenging build-ups to an issue of the magazine yet, Web Hosting's All Star Team. The balloting process was our first experiment with a kind of user participation we're planning to do a lot more with in the months to come. We had thousands of ballots submitted, with hundreds of write-in suggestions and a demonstration of user engagement that has us feeling super positive about the project.

July 2009 - What am I Worth?
One of the interesting luxuries of working on a project like the printed WHIR magazine is that it allows us to play with things like our point of view from one issue to the next. In recent months we've been giving added attention to the kind of practical and applicable advice aimed at smaller hosts and resellers. This issue carries on with that point of view, asking, in our cover story, "what am I worth?" It's a complicated question without a clear-cut answer.

May 2009 - The Blueprint for a Small Web Host
I was a little surprised by how difficult it became to see this idea through. We set out to assemble a blueprint for a small hosting business, but butted up pretty quickly against the general impossibility of covering all the territory that was out there to be covered. The basic constraints of a printed magazine, and the less-than-infinite amount of time we had available forced us to face the fact that we could never produce an exhaustive guide to starting a hosting company.
