Hosting.com Pumps Up Security
August 24, 2006 -- (WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) -- Web hosting provider Hosting.com (hosting.com) announced on Wednesday it has partnered with the managed services security division of Internet Security Systems (iss.net) to provide additional security to its network and to mitigate the increased risk of cyber attacks.
Delivered through the "Powered By ISS" program, the intrusion prevention system applications enable Hosting.com to more proactively block viruses, worms and spyware at the network layer preventing installation and download on its customers' servers. With the "Powered By ISS" program, ISS says it is enabling a wide range of service and technology providers to protect their customers with best-of-breed security.
"During these times of heightened security risks to the US, public and private companies across the country are facing increasing pressure to upgrade their network security," says Darren King, president and CEO of Hosting.com. "Working with the pioneering and most well-respected Internet security company, ISS, we are taking the extra step in protecting our customers' Web assets against vulnerabilities such as cyber viruses, proprietary information theft and denial of service attacks, among others."
As a vulnerability and threat research pioneer, ISS is immediately able to identify security threats in new technology and software programs and quickly develop solutions for its customers and partners to mitigate potential threats. According to ISS and its X-Force Security research and development group, in just the first half of the year, ISS has already documented almost 4,000 vulnerabilities, adding to its total database of almost 30,000 vulnerabilities and confirming the need for enhanced security features and ongoing system improvements.

This has been, for us, one of the most interesting, exciting and challenging build-ups to an issue of the magazine yet, Web Hosting's All Star Team. The balloting process was our first experiment with a kind of user participation we're planning to do a lot more with in the months to come. We had thousands of ballots submitted, with hundreds of write-in suggestions and a demonstration of user engagement that has us feeling super positive about the project.

July 2009 - What am I Worth?
One of the interesting luxuries of working on a project like the printed WHIR magazine is that it allows us to play with things like our point of view from one issue to the next. In recent months we've been giving added attention to the kind of practical and applicable advice aimed at smaller hosts and resellers. This issue carries on with that point of view, asking, in our cover story, "what am I worth?" It's a complicated question without a clear-cut answer.

May 2009 - The Blueprint for a Small Web Host
I was a little surprised by how difficult it became to see this idea through. We set out to assemble a blueprint for a small hosting business, but butted up pretty quickly against the general impossibility of covering all the territory that was out there to be covered. The basic constraints of a printed magazine, and the less-than-infinite amount of time we had available forced us to face the fact that we could never produce an exhaustive guide to starting a hosting company.
