Cisco Outage Due to Human Error

August 9, 2007 -- (WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) -- Internet and Web hosting research group Netcraft (netcraft.com) says that human error was responsible for a data center electrical overload that knocked the Cisco Systems Web site offline on Wednesday.

The outage lasted for about three hours and came as Cisco released four security advisories about vulnerabilities in its networking products and left system administrators unable to access Cisco's support resources. However, the company maintained communication with its users through blogs.cisco.com, which is hosted on another network.

In an update, Cisco officials said the issue occurred during preventative maintenance of one of its data centers when a human error caused an electrical overload on the systems, which caused Cisco.com and other applications to go down. The company adds that because of the severity of the overload, the redundancy measures were impacted as well, but the system did manage to shut down as designed to protect the people and equipment.

Last week, Cisco Systems acquired a $150 million stake in virtualization software developer VMware, buying shares of the company's common stock currently owned by VMware parent company EMC.
