FireHost to Provide Secure Web Hosting to Kevin Mitnick

By David Hamilton, July 30, 2009

(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) -- One of the most famous hackers in the formative years of the Internet, Kevin Mitnick, has reformed, becoming a security consultant. Due to his high-profile and the nature of his current business, however, some hackers have taken it upon themselves to compromise and deface his website multiple times, causing him to turn to FireHost (www.firehost.com) for secure hosting.

Mitnick's website (www.mitnicksecurity.com) fell prey to repeated attacks last month, which can be a challenge for any hosting company. In order to protect his websites from future malicious attacks, Mitnick selected FireHost because of its complete server lockdown, application protection, specialized monitoring services, and other custom solutions specific to his needs.

"I've made it clear to every hosting company that's ever approached me that protecting my sites from hackers is an extraordinary job. FireHost is the only secure hosting company able to show me that they actually do have the goods to get the job done," Mitnick said in a statement. "I feel confident with this decision and hope I won't ever again have to deal with my sites being attacked in such a way."

In the 80's and 90's, Mitnick's hacking of organizations such as Motorola, NEC, Nokia, Sun Microsystems and Fujitsu Siemens systems caught up with him in 1995, when the FBI arrested him at his apartment in Raleigh, North Carolina. It is argued that he was subjected to overzealous prosecution by the government and his crimes were sensationalized in the mainstream media, unfamiliar with the concept of cybercrime.

Having served his time, Kevin Mitnick is now the owner of Mitnick Security Consulting, and author of two computer security books, The Art of Intrusion: The Real Stories Behind the Exploits of Hackers, Intruders & Deceivers, and The Art of Deception.

FireHost will be providing premium managed hosting solutions that combat today's varying threats from hackers, viruses and intruders. FireHost offers constant enterprise-level protection, as well as superior site performance, using the high quality hardware, bandwidth, and services for every customer from small businesses to large enterprises.

FireHost chief executive officer and founder Chris Drake said, like Mitnick, FireHost understands the motivations of hackers. "There are two kinds of hackers in the world, the egomaniacs that are defacing people like Kevin Mitnick and the malicious hackers who are going after confidential data," Drake said in a statement. "FireHost is the only secure hosting company that's protecting companies from both and Mitnick recognizes this. We know we have a challenge in front of us, but feel very confident in our ability to offer the best protection available."

October 2009 - Web Hosting's All Star Team
This has been, for us, one of the most interesting, exciting and challenging build-ups to an issue of the magazine yet, Web Hosting's All Star Team. The balloting process was our first experiment with a kind of user participation we're planning to do a lot more with in the months to come. We had thousands of ballots submitted, with hundreds of write-in suggestions and a demonstration of user engagement that has us feeling super positive about the project.

July 2009 - What am I Worth?
One of the interesting luxuries of working on a project like the printed WHIR magazine is that it allows us to play with things like our point of view from one issue to the next. In recent months we've been giving added attention to the kind of practical and applicable advice aimed at smaller hosts and resellers. This issue carries on with that point of view, asking, in our cover story, "what am I worth?" It's a complicated question without a clear-cut answer.

May 2009 - The Blueprint for a Small Web Host
I was a little surprised by how difficult it became to see this idea through. We set out to assemble a blueprint for a small hosting business, but butted up pretty quickly against the general impossibility of covering all the territory that was out there to be covered. The basic constraints of a printed magazine, and the less-than-infinite amount of time we had available forced us to face the fact that we could never produce an exhaustive guide to starting a hosting company.
