July 24, 2008 -- (WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) -- Following its R1Soft (r1soft.com) partnership announcement, Canadian web hosting provider Cirrus Tech (cirrustech.com) announced on Thursday it is now offering current and potential dedicated server customers new remote backup plans that include R1Soft's Continuous Data Protection software.

Cirrus Tech says it will offer these new data protection services to provide a reliable, efficient and affordable backup solution. The company decided to use R1Soft's CDP software to give customers more value added service than a traditional backup solution.

R1Soft's CDP software provides a near continuous backup by taking periodical snapshots of a customer's hard disk drive and storing each snapshot as a separate restore point.

The frequency of restore point creation is determined by each customer and can be configured as little as 5 to 10 minutes apart to enable near continuous data protection. However, any data transfer that happens as a result of the backup process will go against the monthly traffic quota.

Customers will be able to choose the backup plan best suited for their data protection needs. Each plan has a specific amount of backup space and a maximum number of restore points. Since customers are able to have multiple restore points, they can choose which restore point they would like to use in the case they need to restore their data.

Cirrus Tech customers can choose a remote backup plan that best suits their current backup requirements. The plan's scalable nature enables them to upgrade their backup plan when they need more backup space in the future.

All restore points generated are stored on Cirrus Tech's backup servers running R1Soft's CDP Server Application. Customers can easily manage their backups through a web interface, says the company.

Cirrus Tech's new backup plans range from plans that include 20 to 500GB of remote backup space.

October 2009 - Web Hosting's All Star Team
This has been, for us, one of the most interesting, exciting and challenging build-ups to an issue of the magazine yet, Web Hosting's All Star Team. The balloting process was our first experiment with a kind of user participation we're planning to do a lot more with in the months to come. We had thousands of ballots submitted, with hundreds of write-in suggestions and a demonstration of user engagement that has us feeling super positive about the project.

July 2009 - What am I Worth?
One of the interesting luxuries of working on a project like the printed WHIR magazine is that it allows us to play with things like our point of view from one issue to the next. In recent months we've been giving added attention to the kind of practical and applicable advice aimed at smaller hosts and resellers. This issue carries on with that point of view, asking, in our cover story, "what am I worth?" It's a complicated question without a clear-cut answer.

May 2009 - The Blueprint for a Small Web Host
I was a little surprised by how difficult it became to see this idea through. We set out to assemble a blueprint for a small hosting business, but butted up pretty quickly against the general impossibility of covering all the territory that was out there to be covered. The basic constraints of a printed magazine, and the less-than-infinite amount of time we had available forced us to face the fact that we could never produce an exhaustive guide to starting a hosting company.
