CM4all Offers Consumer Site Builder

July 17, 2006 -- (WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) -- In an effort to cater to what it sees as an emerging mass market for Web hosting and Web site solutions, site building software developer CM4all (cm4all.com) announced on Monday that it has launched CM4all WebsiteCreator Consumer Edition.

Available for the first time at HostingCon 2006, the Consumer Edition software will also soon be available to service providers for customization and licensing. The software will include features for multi-author blogs, community photo albums and an event planner, along with the Web site building tool. The product is designed specifically to be incorporated by service providers looking to provide these services through their own brand.

The Consumer Edition product appears to be designed to provide Web hosts with the tools to combat the growing selection of free online tools that enable Web users to create blogs, store photos online and share calendars. CM4all is be betting that Web hosts can attract mass market consumers by packaging all these Web 2.0 services around one brand and one identity, with the reliability of a paid-for service.

According to the release announcement for the software, CM4all Consumer Edition will include event planning tools, with pre-designed pages for weddings, vacations, parties and family events; professionally-designed site templates; community photo albums; tools for multi-author blogging within a live Web site, and an RSS interface that allows users to integrate their blogs with "mashup" sites.

For Web hosts seeking to attract both mass-market and SMB customers, the Consumer Edition software works as a complement to the existing CM4all site building tool, says the company.

"The CM4all WebsiteCreator Consumer Edition will fit perfectly into the services portfolio of any MSO, ISP, or telco," says Robert Schovenberg, CEO of CM4all, "and represents a simple avenue for generating additional revenue and increasing customer retention. We have already received a lot of positive feedback from potential clients outside of our traditional channels that want to tap into new customer groups."

This has been, for us, one of the most interesting, exciting and challenging build-ups to an issue of the magazine yet, Web Hosting's All Star Team. The balloting process was our first experiment with a kind of user participation we're planning to do a lot more with in the months to come. We had thousands of ballots submitted, with hundreds of write-in suggestions and a demonstration of user engagement that has us feeling super positive about the project.

July 2009 - What am I Worth?
One of the interesting luxuries of working on a project like the printed WHIR magazine is that it allows us to play with things like our point of view from one issue to the next. In recent months we've been giving added attention to the kind of practical and applicable advice aimed at smaller hosts and resellers. This issue carries on with that point of view, asking, in our cover story, "what am I worth?" It's a complicated question without a clear-cut answer.

May 2009 - The Blueprint for a Small Web Host
I was a little surprised by how difficult it became to see this idea through. We set out to assemble a blueprint for a small hosting business, but butted up pretty quickly against the general impossibility of covering all the territory that was out there to be covered. The basic constraints of a printed magazine, and the less-than-infinite amount of time we had available forced us to face the fact that we could never produce an exhaustive guide to starting a hosting company.
