July 11, 2008 -- (WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) -- Switzerland has exceeded former front-runner Hong Kong as the most spammed country last month, according to security vendor MessageLabs (messagelabs.com).

The security firm released its monthly report this week that reveled that spam overall has seen a 0.3 percent decrease from May to June, to account for 76.5 percent of emails.

Some countries have been receiving higher ratios of spam to legitimate emails. Topping the list is Switzerland, with astounding 84.8 percent of spam comprising of its total email.

Rounding out the rest of the list is Hong Kong, France, Israel, and Austria. The US spam percentage of 68.8 percent in June seemed relatively reasonable in comparison, while Australia showed even less with 66.9 percent.

Finally, Canada and the UK both had typically high percentage of spam to overall messages with 77.8 percent and 74.3 percent, respectively.  MessageLabs said the file resides on a page linked from the spam; the visitor is prompted to grab the ActiveX control to view the video, but instead ends up with malware related to the Storm botnet.

Coincidentally, the sentencing of Robert Soloway, the "King of Spam", began on Friday in federal after pleading guilty in March to mail fraud, fraud in connection with electronic mail and willful failure to file return for sentencing.
