(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) -- Colocation services provider Internap Network Services (www.internap.com) announced on Wednesday it has implemented several green initiatives as part of the expansion of the company's N+1 rated data center located in the premier carrier hotel in the Chelsea section of Manhattan.
The data center, which has now been expanded by an additional 8,500 square feet of data center space, was outfitted with the industry's newest energy-efficient systems.
The overall size of the facility's raised floor spacehas now been expanded to 33,500 square feet.
"The implementation of green initiatives in this high-demand NYC locale has provided our Manhattan customers with a data center that is 15 to 20 percent more energy efficient than one using conventional technologies," says Mike Higgins, Internap general manager and VP of data center operations. "By improving operating efficiencies within the data center infrastructure, Internap has increased the amount of power available for customer IT loads. In today's environment, providing customers a higher density power solution is a key differentiator in the marketplace."
The energy-efficient upgrades include the installation of an ultrasonic humidification system, which uses less energy than traditional methods for balancing humidity.
The company also installed energy-efficient electronically commutated fans and variable frequency drives within the air conditioning systems.
EC fans provide an immediate energy savings of up to 30 percent over units using conventional technology, while VFDs adjust motor speed to better match output requirements, resulting in further energy savings.
An Energy Management System was also integrated to monitor and control all critical infrastructure in the data center, balancing AC units, space temperatures, humidity and other controls to ensure systems work in unison.
With the new green initiatives in place, Internap is eligible for rebate checks from the New York State Energy Research and Development Organization in recognition of the energy-efficient enhancements.
In addition to the NYC facility, Internap has eight other data center locations across the US, Europe, Asia, and Australia.

October 2009 - Web Hosting's All Star Team
This has been, for us, one of the most interesting, exciting and challenging build-ups to an issue of the magazine yet, Web Hosting's All Star Team. The balloting process was our first experiment with a kind of user participation we're planning to do a lot more with in the months to come. We had thousands of ballots submitted, with hundreds of write-in suggestions and a demonstration of user engagement that has us feeling super positive about the project.

July 2009 - What am I Worth?
One of the interesting luxuries of working on a project like the printed WHIR magazine is that it allows us to play with things like our point of view from one issue to the next. In recent months we've been giving added attention to the kind of practical and applicable advice aimed at smaller hosts and resellers. This issue carries on with that point of view, asking, in our cover story, "what am I worth?" It's a complicated question without a clear-cut answer.

May 2009 - The Blueprint for a Small Web Host
I was a little surprised by how difficult it became to see this idea through. We set out to assemble a blueprint for a small hosting business, but butted up pretty quickly against the general impossibility of covering all the territory that was out there to be covered. The basic constraints of a printed magazine, and the less-than-infinite amount of time we had available forced us to face the fact that we could never produce an exhaustive guide to starting a hosting company.
