Layered Tech Adds Microsoft Server 2008

By Justin Lee, July 06, 2009

(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) -- Layered Technologies (www.layeredtech.com) announced last week that Microsoft Windows Server 2008 is now available for rapid server deployments via Astro, the company's proprietary automated web hosting platform.

The company previously only offered Linux and Unix operating systems.

According to the press release, with the addition of Windows Server 2008, Layered Tech customers will be able to "develop, deliver and manage rich user experiences and applications, provide a highly secure network infrastructure, and increase technological efficiency and value within their organizations."

Astro displays server inventory in real-time and enables near instantaneous server provisioning.

As a result, Layered Tech customers will be able to easily configure their server, complete the purchase and have it available for use within 90 minutes.

"By adding Windows Server 2008 to our rapid deployment server offerings, customers can stay current with the latest offerings from Microsoft, explore new features with the .NET product offering and leverage a rich Web server environment that is more robust and feature-driven than previous versions of IIS," says Layered Tech COO and CIO Terrance Bush. "We continue to evaluate the latest and greatest server technologies to determine what will best meet our customers' needs and support their business goals. We're excited to make Windows Server 2008 available within our rapid deployment service offering, provide our customers a wide variety of robust operating system options, and deliver powerful servers in less than two hours after selection."

The Windows Server 2008 editions currently available via Astro include Data Center Edition, Standard Edition, and Enterprise Edition.

Through Astro, customers will be able to customize their rapid deployment servers with a wide range of offerings, including the option to deploy IIS, Plesk Control Panel, virtual firewall Solutions and DEFCON bundled managed services.

Customers can use Layered Tech's centralized client management portal, Encompass, to manage their account, request support, reboot servers and access other critical information.

Launched in January in its DataBank data center in Dallas, Layered Technologies' Astro is an autonomous platform that lets customers add more services within minutes.

October 2009 - Web Hosting's All Star Team
This has been, for us, one of the most interesting, exciting and challenging build-ups to an issue of the magazine yet, Web Hosting's All Star Team. The balloting process was our first experiment with a kind of user participation we're planning to do a lot more with in the months to come. We had thousands of ballots submitted, with hundreds of write-in suggestions and a demonstration of user engagement that has us feeling super positive about the project.

July 2009 - What am I Worth?
One of the interesting luxuries of working on a project like the printed WHIR magazine is that it allows us to play with things like our point of view from one issue to the next. In recent months we've been giving added attention to the kind of practical and applicable advice aimed at smaller hosts and resellers. This issue carries on with that point of view, asking, in our cover story, "what am I worth?" It's a complicated question without a clear-cut answer.

May 2009 - The Blueprint for a Small Web Host
I was a little surprised by how difficult it became to see this idea through. We set out to assemble a blueprint for a small hosting business, but butted up pretty quickly against the general impossibility of covering all the territory that was out there to be covered. The basic constraints of a printed magazine, and the less-than-infinite amount of time we had available forced us to face the fact that we could never produce an exhaustive guide to starting a hosting company.
