June 18, 2008 -- (WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) -- Hosting and virtualization software firm Parallels (parallels.com) said this week that its Parallels Server for Mac had seen its first implementation in a hosting environment.
On Tuesday the company announced that hosting provider Media Temple (mediatemple.net), the product launch partner for the software, has launched what the press release describes as "the world's first Leopard VPS hosting solution," with its (xv) Xserve-Virtual server.
Parallels Server for Mac is a hypervisor server virtualization software that runs on Intel-powered Apple hardware, including Xserve and Mac Pro machines running Leopard Server or Tiger Server, according to Parallels.
The Media Temple website includes an informational section on the (xv) Xserve-Virtual offering, which is currently a private beta. Aside from vague references to "power" and "beauty," the advantages of hosting on Leopard Server appear to be the Mac-style management and monitoring if the server.
The site includes a link to an application form for the beta program, which appears to be targeted at experienced users of Apple's server software.
The beta version of virtual server offered the (xv) Xserve-Virtual product includes "2GB of RAM with a dedicated CPU core of an Apple Xserve with 8 3GHz CPU cores, 32GB of RAM with 15,000 RPM SAS drives in RAID."
"Through Parallels Server for Mac, we can apply our years of experience with web hosting technologies to deliver new services based on Apple servers," says Demian Sellfors, CEO of Media Temple in the Parallels press release. "For 7 years, Parallels has been an incredible partner who consistently delivers virtualization software and tools. It's been crucial to our business and has helped make us one of the largest Parallels Virtuozzo Containers virtual deployments in the world."
Parallels says the Server for Mac software includes the industry's first support for Mac OS X10.5 Server as a guest operating system in a virtual machine. The software is priced similarly to the company's existing Virtuozzo Container offerings. Complete information about the software is available on the company's website.

In recent months we've been giving added attention to the kind of practical and applicable advice aimed at smaller hosts and resellers. This issue carries on with that point of view, asking, in our cover story, "what am I worth?" It's a complicated question without a clear-cut answer.

May 2009 - The Blueprint for a Small Web Host
I was a little surprised by how difficult it became to see this idea through. We set out to assemble a blueprint for a small hosting business, but butted up pretty quickly against the general impossibility of covering all the territory that was out there to be covered. The basic constraints of a printed magazine, and the less-than-infinite amount of time we had available forced us to face the fact that we could never produce an exhaustive guide to starting a hosting company.

They need to eat up the market gain credibility and go public at 2.00/sh as VSYS. We will see, I think they have a lot to offer.
