Equinix Expands Exchange to Zurich

June 18, 2008 -- (WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) -- Data center operator Equinix (equinix.com) announced the expansion of its Equinix Exchange service to the company's Zurich Internet Business Exchange center.

The Equinix Exchange service enables companies to interconnect their networks to efficiently move data to Internet destinations.

The company will now incorporate this service in its Zurich IBX for what was previously branded as The Internet Exchange. In this largest exchange in Switzerland, over 60 members will directly exchange Internet traffic with one another.

Using an Ethernet central switching fabric, Equinix Exchange facilitates interconnection and peering. Internet companies operating within Equinix IBX centers, including network service providers, content, e-commerce and enterprise companies delivering video, gaming or other applications, can directly connect to each other through this connection.

Instead of purchasing expensive transit to reach partners across the Internet, Equinix Exchange offers a more cost-effective solution.

Companies can send data through intermediary networks for improved end-to-end network performance, speed and reliability, while reducing their overall IP transit costs.

"The growth of video and other low-latency applications is placing increasing demands on network infrastructure and requires that data be exchanged between networks as quickly and efficiently as possible," says Eric Schwartz, president of Equinix Europe. "Equinix Exchange provides a platform for ISPs, content companies and enterprises to implement a high-performance, highly versatile, yet low cost IP interconnection infrastructure within a secure, network-neutral environment."

Since acquiring European colocation service provider IXEurope last July, and subsequently integrating its 14 data centers under the Equinix brand, the company has been expanding its European presence to meet demands.

Equinix Exchange is available in Equinix IBX centers around the world, including in Chicago, Dallas, Los Angeles, New York, Paris, Silicon Valley, Singapore, Sydney, Tokyo, Washington, D.C. and Zurich areas.

The service is used by more than 270 companies, including Yahoo!, Google, AT&T, Deutsche Telecom, British Telecom, Cable & Wireless and NTT.

Logicworks recently expanded its operations into Equinix's New York 4 Internet Business Exchange in Seacaucus, New Jersey.
