Parallels Powers STRATO Database

June 9, 2008 -- (WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) -- Web hosting software provider Parallels (parallels.com) announced on Monday it has partnered with European web hosting provider STRATO (strato-hosting.co.uk) to power the STRATO Oracle Server XE database offering.

Designed for small and medium business owners, the pre-configured database solution uses Oracle Database 10g Release 2 Express Edition, Parallels Virtuozzo Containers, Parallels Plesk Control Panel and Parallels Automation.

Parallels Virtuozzo Containers enables STRATO customers to cost-effectively develop web applications by virtualizing the database server while Parallels Automation enables the company to manage ordering, billing and reporting for resources across several servers.

The web hosting provider's customers can use Parallels Plesk Control Panel to manage their virtual servers through a web interface. Parallels Virtuozzo Containers includes extensive controls so that available hardware resources can be reallocated in real-time to manage workload fluctuations.

"STRATO's new virtual database servers powered by Parallels software provide businesses with the infrastructure needed to take advantage of two key hosting trends - virtualization and SaaS," says Serguei Beloussov, CEO of Parallels. "The new offering gives SMBs innovative technologies that have traditionally been reserved for large enterprises due to technical requirements and previously high cost."

This latest deal follows a series of customer offerings that Parallels has announced in recent weeks, adding to the company's rapidly growing customer base. Last week, the company announced that Irish hosting provider Blacknight Internet Solutions is offering a set of virtual private server plans based on Parallels' software.

Parallels is also powering ActiveVPS managed hosting plans using its Virtuozzo Containers, Plesk Control Panels and Parallels Business Automation software, integrating SmarterTrack Customer Service Software into the Application Packaging Standard Catalog and delivering PHP applications from Zend through its control panel and server virtualization offerings.

Additionally, Canadian web host Cirrus Tech announced last month it is offering Parallels control panel Plesk 8.4 with all its Linux VPS and dedicated server plans.

October 2009 - Web Hosting's All Star Team
This has been, for us, one of the most interesting, exciting and challenging build-ups to an issue of the magazine yet, Web Hosting's All Star Team. The balloting process was our first experiment with a kind of user participation we're planning to do a lot more with in the months to come. We had thousands of ballots submitted, with hundreds of write-in suggestions and a demonstration of user engagement that has us feeling super positive about the project.

July 2009 - What am I Worth?
One of the interesting luxuries of working on a project like the printed WHIR magazine is that it allows us to play with things like our point of view from one issue to the next. In recent months we've been giving added attention to the kind of practical and applicable advice aimed at smaller hosts and resellers. This issue carries on with that point of view, asking, in our cover story, "what am I worth?" It's a complicated question without a clear-cut answer.

May 2009 - The Blueprint for a Small Web Host
I was a little surprised by how difficult it became to see this idea through. We set out to assemble a blueprint for a small hosting business, but butted up pretty quickly against the general impossibility of covering all the territory that was out there to be covered. The basic constraints of a printed magazine, and the less-than-infinite amount of time we had available forced us to face the fact that we could never produce an exhaustive guide to starting a hosting company.
