VeriSign Extends SSL Partnership with Web.com

(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) -- Certificate Authority VeriSign (www.verisign.com) has extended its partnership with small and medium-sized businesses online web design, hosting and marketing firm Web.com (www.web.com), letting Web.com customers implement VeriSign's "Secured Seal," showing visitors a site is secured using industry-leading Secure Sockets Layer technology.

Because of the new agreement, Web.com customers can benefit with the VeriSign Secured Seal, the "most recognized trust mark on the Internet when it comes to online security," according to VeriSign's Monday announcement.

"When we discuss our customers' business goals for their sites, we help them develop a detailed blueprint to succeed online," Web.com president Jeff Stibel said in a statement. "The customers we work with place a high premium on conducting business online in a safe and secure environment."

By displaying the VeriSign Secured Seal, online retailers and other businesses show visitors that their site is secured using the leading SSL technology of a globally respected Certificate Authority, verified by a Synovate Research report from September 2008.

VeriSign SSL division vice president and general manager Michael Lin said VeriSign SSL ensures e-commerce customers a level of confidence, which is invaluable for online businesses. "The VeriSign Secured Seal takes the anonymity out of online transactions and offers the kind of reassurance consumers are looking for on the Internet," Lin said in a statement. "We're delighted to extend our SSL partnership with Web.com."

VeriSign provides EV SSL certificates to more than 10,000 domain names, representing 74 percent of the entire EV SSL Certificate market worldwide.

According to a May 2009 Trends Report from online security and analytics firm Netcraft (www.netcraft.com), Go Daddy led the overall net growth in SSL certificates in May, accounting for 44 percent of total growth. Go Daddy's marketshare, however, is mostly due to its domination in domain-only SSL certificates. VeriSign still leads the market in EV SSL certificate sales with three quarters of the market. It also leads the organization validated SSL certificate sales with nearly half of the market.

October 2009 - Web Hosting's All Star Team
This has been, for us, one of the most interesting, exciting and challenging build-ups to an issue of the magazine yet, Web Hosting's All Star Team. The balloting process was our first experiment with a kind of user participation we're planning to do a lot more with in the months to come. We had thousands of ballots submitted, with hundreds of write-in suggestions and a demonstration of user engagement that has us feeling super positive about the project.

One of the interesting luxuries of working on a project like the printed WHIR magazine is that it allows us to play with things like our point of view from one issue to the next. In recent months we've been giving added attention to the kind of practical and applicable advice aimed at smaller hosts and resellers. This issue carries on with that point of view, asking, in our cover story, "what am I worth?" It's a complicated question without a clear-cut answer.

May 2009 - The Blueprint for a Small Web Host
I was a little surprised by how difficult it became to see this idea through. We set out to assemble a blueprint for a small hosting business, but butted up pretty quickly against the general impossibility of covering all the territory that was out there to be covered. The basic constraints of a printed magazine, and the less-than-infinite amount of time we had available forced us to face the fact that we could never produce an exhaustive guide to starting a hosting company.
