(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) -- According to a press release issued Thursday by Internet security firm and certificate authority VeriSign (www.verisign.com), wholesale Internet services firm Tucows (www.tucows.com) is extending the SSL certificate offerings of its reseller services brand OpenSRS (www.opensrs.com) to include the entire range of SSL products from VeriSign.
OpenSRS had previously offered its web hosting and ISP resellers wholesale SSL certificates from VeriSign’s GeoTrust (www.geotrust.com) brand. The new deal will see the company offer the company’s VeriSign and thawte (www.thawte.com) branded certificates.
SSL certificates are a key product for OpenSRS. The company’s relationship with GeoTrust predates that company’s acquisition by VeriSign. The new deal will, most significantly, enable OpenSRS resellers to offer VeriSign’s extended validation certificates, which will enable their customers to display the “green bar” in the web browsers of website visitors.
OpenSRS is a compelling channel for VeriSign to distribute the SSL products, with an enormous base of resellers - particularly in the SSL and domain spaces. OpenSRS says demand for EV certificates has been high among resellers. How popular the significantly more expensive products will prove remains to be seen.
A complete listing of the prices for the newly-offered SSL products is available at the OpenSRS website.
"At OpenSRS, we recognize the importance of online security and VeriSign SSL and EV SSL certificates provide an ideal add-on to domain name sales for our resellers, allowing them to offer a complete online security solution to their customers," says David Woroch, VP of sales at OpenSRS, quoted in the press release. "Our goal is to make sure that our resellers understand the value of the most trusted name on the web, and how to leverage it in their own solution portfolios."
In the section of the OpenSRS website promoting the new certificates, the company describes some of the market-specific appeal of the individual brands, pointing out thawte’s popularity among small businesses in Europe and Asia and VeriSign’s sway among large enterprises.

October 2009 - Web Hosting's All Star Team
This has been, for us, one of the most interesting, exciting and challenging build-ups to an issue of the magazine yet, Web Hosting's All Star Team. The balloting process was our first experiment with a kind of user participation we're planning to do a lot more with in the months to come. We had thousands of ballots submitted, with hundreds of write-in suggestions and a demonstration of user engagement that has us feeling super positive about the project.

July 2009 - What am I Worth?
One of the interesting luxuries of working on a project like the printed WHIR magazine is that it allows us to play with things like our point of view from one issue to the next. In recent months we've been giving added attention to the kind of practical and applicable advice aimed at smaller hosts and resellers. This issue carries on with that point of view, asking, in our cover story, "what am I worth?" It's a complicated question without a clear-cut answer.

May 2009 - The Blueprint for a Small Web Host
I was a little surprised by how difficult it became to see this idea through. We set out to assemble a blueprint for a small hosting business, but butted up pretty quickly against the general impossibility of covering all the territory that was out there to be covered. The basic constraints of a printed magazine, and the less-than-infinite amount of time we had available forced us to face the fact that we could never produce an exhaustive guide to starting a hosting company.
