May 8, 2008 -- (WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) -- Managed hosting provider PEER 1 (peer1.com) reported on Thursday that it has donated a range of IT services to Pangea Day, a one-day film event designed to invite participation from around the world through online collaboration.

The event, scheduled for Saturday, May 10, will attempt to "help bring the world together for a unique shared experience" through live broadcast in venues located in Cairo, Kigali, London, Los Angeles, Mumbai and Rio de Janeiro, along with thousands of self-organized events planned in more than 100 countries. The event is expected to reach an audience of millions through web- and mobile phone-based feeds, along with more traditional broadcasts.

The event will include 24 short films and a range of presentation by speakers and musical performers. The films were picked from an international competition that saw more than 2,500 submissions from 100 countries.

The web-based portion of the event will be supported by PEER 1's network, which includes 15 data centers and 17 points of presence across North America. PEER 1 says it is donating free managed hosting services, systems architecture, database failover services and on-site technical support on the day of the event for the Pangea Day IT network. And the company will continue to support the event after the big day.

"As a worldwide network, we are committed to maximizing the possibilities of the Internet, which breaks down borders and connects individuals, organizations and businesses of all kinds around the world," said Robert Miggins, vice president of business development for PEER 1, in the company's press release.

According to PEER 1, Pangea Day was created in 2006 by documentary filmmaker Jehane Noujaim, who one the Technology Entertainment Design conference award, which aims to grant the winner "a wish to change the world." Noujaim chose to use film to bring the world together, says the company.
