(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) -- After thorough testing conducted by the Science Applications International Corporation, data security provider Imperva (www.imperva.com) has proven its web application firewall and database monitoring solution SecureSphere v6.0 has achieved Common Criteria Certification, a worldwide standard for assessing the reliability, quality, and trustworthiness of IT products.
Following its successful completion of tests conducted by the SAIC's Common Criteria Testing Laboratory, according to Imperva's Tuesday announcement, SecureSphere was awarded Common Criteria certification at Evaluation Assurance Level 2 (or ISO 15408), a certification that is recognized by US government organizations, international government entities, and global enterprises to evaluate and select IT security products.
Common Criteria is validated by unbiased, third-parties, assuring government organizations and businesses that they meet strict IT security, reliability and quality standards. This certification proves SecureSphere can maintain data integrity, prevent fraud, abuse and data theft, and achieve compliance with a wide range of regulations, including the Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard and the Sarbanes-Oxley Act of 2002.
"Imperva SecureSphere is the first web application firewall and database activity monitoring solution to achieve Common Criteria certification," Imperva chief technology officer Amichai Shulman said in a statement. "Common Criteria is a requirement for IT products among the world's most security conscious organizations -- including government agencies, the military, critical infrastructure providers, etc. This certification is recognized around the globe, and will open important new markets for us."
Imperva is demonstrating SecureSphere at this week's RSA Conference (www.rsaconference.com), the world's largest security conference.

The balloting process was our first experiment with a kind of user participation we're planning to do a lot more with in the months to come. We had thousands of ballots submitted, with hundreds of write-in suggestions and a demonstration of user engagement that has us feeling super positive about the project.

One of the interesting luxuries of working on a project like the printed WHIR magazine is that it allows us to play with things like our point of view from one issue to the next. In recent months we've been giving added attention to the kind of practical and applicable advice aimed at smaller hosts and resellers. This issue carries on with that point of view, asking, in our cover story, "what am I worth?" It's a complicated question without a clear-cut answer.

May 2009 - The Blueprint for a Small Web Host
I was a little surprised by how difficult it became to see this idea through. We set out to assemble a blueprint for a small hosting business, but butted up pretty quickly against the general impossibility of covering all the territory that was out there to be covered. The basic constraints of a printed magazine, and the less-than-infinite amount of time we had available forced us to face the fact that we could never produce an exhaustive guide to starting a hosting company.
